Even if he were Jet Li, with a wire harness allow people to manipulate his direction in flight, and they had choreographed it and rehearsed a few time, I would struggle to accept that he could have made a midair decision to bump in the nano second that Shiel had the ball.

I'd still need to be convinced that it was a bump.

My original post was my take on it.
If the MRP's assessment (& Shane you are living in another dimension to suggest it won't be assessed) is he was contesting the ball, it was a football act, etc etc... and plays next week then that also is not an unreasonable outcome.

But you do leave the game open to players using themselves as cannon balls with no regard to other players safety in either an attempt to win a contested ball or a more sinister intent to take out a player under the guise of contesting the ball.

I hope he plays.

There has to be an offence for it to be assessed. A collision with incidental contact, where two players are going for the football in a reasonable manner, isn't an offence.

They'll probably write it up because it's a grand final but it will end with 'no further action was taken'

The West has him hung drawn and quartered.

Nothing like a Victorian conspiracy theory now West Coast are out.

Accidental collision. Hard to see how can it be an intentional high bump if the bumper was even lower to the ground than the bumpee? They both went full out for the ball fairly, one got unlucky.

RM, I understand that you want consistency. On it's face, it seems like a simple request.

But there are no bright lines when it comes to the tribunal. Everything is a shade of grey. There are some very sensible people on this board who will disagree as to whether what Cotchin did was even a bump. How can an MRP be 'consistent' when the decision is rarely obvious? Add to the fact that no two incidents are exactly the same, and the make-up of the MRP changes from time to time, and you are never going to have true consistency.

Look a the codified list of factors the MRP can consider in determining the level of impact (if any) of a bump which causes a head clash:
Whether the degree of force applied by the Player bumping was excessive for the situation;
Whether the Player being bumped was actively involved in the passage of play;
The distance the Player applying the bump has run to make contact;
Whether the Player being bumped is in a position to protect himself;
Whether the Player bumping jumps or leaves the ground to bump; and
Any alternatives available to the Player instead of applying a bump.

Even if Cotchin could be technically suspended, is it really in the interests of footy for a marginal case to preclude a player from participating in possibly the biggest day in his life? Enforcing rules without consideration of the gravity of the consequences isn't in the interest of footy.

If this incident happened in a Grand Final match, would so many people be in favour of Cotchin?

Semantics on your part:

There has to be an offence for it to be assessed.
Offence = Charge made & a level of offence decided. There only has to be an incident for it to be assessed.

They'll probably write it up (Um hello Shane that's an assessment) because it's a grand final but it will end with 'no further action was taken.

Examples
Match Review Panel full statement: round 17
Other incidents "assessed" Contact between the Brisbane Lions’ Nick Robertson and Richmond’s Trent Cotchin from the third quarter of Sunday’s match was assessed. It was the view of the panel that the force used in the contact was below that required to constitute a report. No further action was taken.

Match Review Panel full statement: round 18
Other incidents "assessed":

Contact between Essendon’s Cale Hooker and North Melbourne’s Daniel Nielson from the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The panel said Hooker made negligible contact with an open-hand push. No further action was required.

Contact between the Sydney Swans’ Isaac Heeney and St Kilda’s Jarryn Geary from the second quarter of Saturday’s match was assessed. The panel said Geary had the ball and jumped into the air to dispose of the ball before being tackled. It was the view of the panel that Heeney took Geary straight to ground without using excessive force and no further action was required.

The read somewhere Shiel finished out the first quarter and then failed a concussion test at quarter time, so he wouldnt have played 20 minutes after the incident. Cotchin should be out mainly due to the three strikes rule here. People will start pointing at Sloane's incident as well to give Cotchin an equal chance to playing.

Tigers supporters are halfway through a 36 hour drinkathon. They will wake up tomorrow (maybe) after debating all day that he should play, faced with the problem of GF ticket allocation and prices.

Cotchin tucks his elbow in, clenched his fist and ducks his head into the contact. That, people, is a 'bump'.

Once he elected to bump (front on from several of the camera angles I've seen of this incident, replayed over and over and over...) the onus is on him to not injury the 'bumpee'.

Delayed concussion does not save Cotchin as there have been several incidents this year alone where that has occurred. Not as a 'ploy' clubs use to keep players on the park (the clubs get hung, drawn and quartered if that's proven), but simply a medical phenonomon.

The only reason Cotchin will be rubbed out is due to having 2 strikes against him for sniping others during the season.

But I expect he AFL will seek to 'square' the ledger by rubbing out Sloane for his clash with Dangerwood.

Hey, if it's good enough for Bob Murphy to miss a drought-breaking flag win - then it's good enough for Cotchin too.

Meh. Richmond might have already played their GF. They're not going to get a G-full of supporters next week. They seemed to feed off that very well.

I feel for Lingy. The decibel meter was a stroke of commentary genius. I wonder if he used to to measure how loud Baz could shout 'Dusty'? He had enough opportunity.

Watched it again many times. He did go a bump. Left leg gets braced to throw himself into the collision. Tucks up and wham. Hits him in the head, then the right shoulder.
Nothing accidental in the action.

If he was wearing a purple jumper and it was a red anything jumper it would be two weeks down to one with an early plea.

Because he is wearing the fantasy jumper and the AFL wants 100K people at the ground they will let him play.

Here on Dockerland we will argue about it for a month because we weren't in the finals and we have had a crap couple of years and the drafting doesn't start for another month.

If things had been a tiny bit different and Cotchin had got his hands on the ball a nano second earlier, and Shiel's shoulder had made contact with Cotchin's head, it wouldn't have been a reportable incident the other way. You have to let players contest the ball in that situation. I just saw two players go hard at the ball and incidental head contact to one.
