The one that I notice that does not take the game on as he used to, dashing through the centre, plenty of bounces and kicking long into attack is Stephen Hill.
With his skill and attributes watching him kick dinky little 20 metre kicks and going backwards, sideways, etc is very frustrating.

I've seen Lyon be blamed for a lot of things, but being blamed for a bloke in his thirties not taking hangers is a new one.

I'd love to get to the bottom of that one training incident, seen by one person, that is trotted out as gospel about how Lyon hates Freo players kicking the ball forward to other Freo players. Is it possible something else was going on?

And Barlow wasn't out of favour because he didn't refuse to play Rollyball, it was because we had a midfield full of slow midfielders with below average kicking skills, he was squeezed out to the flanks and he was no good there. Barlow was right to be upset - he's a very good player - just not better than Fyfe, Mundy and Neale.

But better than Sutcliffe, Suban, Sheridan and from what we've seen so far, Tucker.

These are the times when you'd love to have the ability to get Luke McPharlin on the phone and ask him if Ross told him to stop going for hangers so as to put an end to this bunkum.

For crying out loud - the bloke's calf muscles resembled guitar strings in his last few years at Freo.

I heard Luke McPharlin interviewed, and he said that Roly told him to stop going for marks. So that bit at least did happen.

RR, was that instruction based on Lyon not wanting Elvis to fly for the marks, per see, or to stop him tearing golf-ball sized holes in his calves every time he did?? Based on how many games he played in his final few seasons - I reckon option 2 might have been it.

Not being a bio-mechanical expert, but I have noticed that the older blokes get, the less height they get when going for speccies. It would be an interesting study to have some follow up testing done on the players who have been through the draft combines to see how their results track throughout their careers. I'd be thinking the vertical leap results, overall, will tail off with age. There will always be freaks like Gablett Snr & Howe who seem to have double-spring coilovers as legs.

Wet Toast will be hoping their dreadlocked messiah hasn't lost too much of his spring after his repaired ACL - as the entire media over here seem to think he's the only missing piece to their premiership puzzle. Him and the pickups from the last two or three drafts who are apparently '(insert name of modern day great) clones' - even though none of them have played more that a handful of AFL games yet. Or as with the class of 2016 - not a single one. Good luck with that.

If Lyon did tell him to stop marking, it would have been to prolong his career. He was cotton-wooled so heavily in his last couple of seasons, the back-line should have been called Johnson & Johnson.

Just did a quick google but couldn't find the article where Barlow mentioned how he was castigated for not centring the ball to a better option after he kicked that brilliant banana goal against Adelaide.

Elvis was 29 when RL arrived and happy to fly for marks and back himself in to take them in difficult situations the year prior to RL (only missing 14 games over the previous 6 seasons). It was his greatest attribute the contested mark and his athletic ability was second to none. He was quite clearly still able to fly for marks and beat opponents but was instructed not to (I'm pretty sure he said as much in an interview with Barlow once retiring but I'm not going back to look for it).

RL's whole system is based on players sacrificing their game to play his way and it's quite ridiculous to suggest otherwise. You fit in or you're out. Pav liked that style and said so in his book but I personally prefer a coach who is less robotic and more creative and adaptive as did many other players who had less favourable comments for RL.

Giving players the confidence to go out and play, learn and occasionally make mistakes is what you need to do with a young side, introducing over time various systems and plays to guide them. A rigorous formula to be studied and conformed to doesn't breed footballers or allow too much room for learning how to become the best footballer you can be and that is a big problem with where our squad is at.

If Wilson came over I'd hope the time he's spent already learning and adapting to AFL football over the past 6/7yrs would hold him in good stead and allow him to still play on instinct but I have no doubt RL would try to coach a degree of that out and have him second guessing himself as he is required to play various roles in RL's systems.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

And yet Luke won his one and only AA jumper in the first year Lyon coached the Docker's (2012).

I'm assuming that was as a result of not having had his natural 'instincts' coached out of him by RL yet?

2012 we also beat Geelong at the 'G in an Elimin Final (after they absolutely flogged us at the same venue in 2010) and just fell short against Adelaide the week after.

Of course, we all know we got as close as we ever have to a flag the following season - having dispatched Geebung at Arctic Park (to this day our greatest ever win, IMHO) and then absolutely smashed Sydeney in the Prelim.

But taking this line of thinking to its logical conclusion that was the players operating on 'instinct' alone, to the exclusion of any 'game plans' introduced by the coaching group?? * (sarcastica font engaged).

I could also wax lyrical how Roly took a tough line with blokes like Walters, Pearce (of the Clancee variety) and reinvented blokes like Creepy who were headed for the scrap heap and turned him into the best tagger of the modern era (IMHO).

And to be honest, can't recall too many players who were moved on by coaches/clubs having too many good things to say about the people who did the moving on.

Nah, I'll take the opinions of our greatest ever player, the heir apparent to that crown and superstars like SonSon over a few blokes who couldn't cut the mustard. Just for the record, I don't recall ever hearing Luke bagging out Roly as a coach - but I'm sure there are those on here who remember some obscure interview of which there is no surviving record, to which only a select few (all on this site) heard and therefore it must be true.

Seriously, I reckon we're becoming the footy club version of the Democrats. Quite happy to be the loonies at the bottom of the garden (to paraphrase) that no one took seriously but boy, didn't they lose with 'flair'?! Who, once their club/party started to be taken seriously, applied some discipline and professionalism to their processs and were able to match with the big boys - they pined for the 'glory' days of yore. Much easier and more fun throwing grenades into the tent from outside than having some discipline and stepping inside the tent to achieve real outcomes.

You might argue I know nothing of the Dockers story but I had a front row seat to the Dems implosion. The similarities when it comes to the opinions proffered on chat groups similar to this are, however, palpable.

So there are some hard done by players that've been chastised, badly coached or shafted by Roly. He's clearly been in the game to ruin players raw abilities, confidence and self worth. This sort of comedy banter should be saved for the Slime forum.
