TOPIC: Not sure he would fit in.

Awake Not sure he would fit in. 6 years 7 months ago #1

Awake
From Foxsports:
His 65-metre pinpoint stab kicks travel from A to B like a concord jet. Their difficulty is high but so is the reward when they come off as planned. According to Champion Data, Wilson attempts kicks that are laced with risk more often than any other Giant.
“I was a bit stagnant against Adelaide,” Wilson said.
“So the coaches really wanted me to run and carry the footy. ... “Keeping that instinct comes down to the coaches. They let us play our way and show what we’ve got. Ahead of this game, they said, ‘Play on your instinct and just play footy. That’s what you’re here for’.”

Sounds like a game plan to me. Unlikely to see it or him here?

Depends on how many players GWS offload to Carlton in order to be under the sal cap now that JKelly has re-signed

They may need to jettison some more given the quality they have on the list. Thats where Freo comes in with enough points in picks to satisfy a pick in the 20s, which is I think pick 40 and 52

He'd do nicely running it out of the backline and hitting up Bennell

Wilson at Fremantle ...

Ahead of this game, they said, ‘Don't play on, don't trust your instinct and don't just play footy. Stand around the footy and bottle things up and drive everyone to the beer queue. That's what you're here for. This new stadium won't pay for itself"

Wilson has clearly stated that he wants to stay where he is . Good luck Bondy - We can't get them even when they want to come to us!

I'm not sure that was where Awake was going with the question.

I've never seen any evidence of the good players losing their instincts. Walters seems to know instantly what to do with the ball, as did Ballas at his best. Johnno sells baulks at will and takes chances up the middle. The Hill boys run wherever they like. Fyfe seems to get where he needs to go and Neale seems to know whose feet to be at. Ryan slotted in well when he got there and seemed to know what to do with the ball.

The only players Roly seems to have 'coached the instinct out of' also seem to be the ones who aren't and have never been very good at footy. Probably a coincidence.

Ibbo was always the outlier. He seemed to have good instincts every other year.

Barlow refused to have the instinct coached out of him and was delisted.

Where does that sit in the argument?

I reckon you've had the ability to recognise great football coached out if you.

Spot on Morgan. Yeah and after round 2 Lyon said I'll play the kids and you guys play on instinct and enjoy your footy. After a few wins in a row he said clearly this isn't working so let's go back to sideways kicking and moving the ball slowly. That's sounds about right ? And Barlow wasn't delisted for refusing to play on instinct we needed to get games into Blakey, Langdon, Weller etc. It was a waste playing a very good footballer out of position or running around in the Wafl. By my understanding it was mutual

Any post-freo interview with Barlow shows it was only mutual for Lyon and Bond.

That's simply not true Morgan. How many times did you see Elvis fly for a mark once RL took over? How many times did you see a player stop running forward to take the game on and instead go backwards? You've even pointed it out yourself this season with B Hill and his transition from hard running attacking football to going sideways and backwards across defence where his average kicking has been more costly.

There's even been reports at training sessions in the past where the whole side was punished because players backed themselves for the mark instead of going for the spoil. It's always been RL's way or the highway which is why it was great to see the youth come though in Rd 3 this year and cast that aside for a while.

Wilson at Freo would be fantastic but like B Hill, his impact would diminish the longer he spends in RL's system.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

McPharlin was towards the end of his career and lost a bit of spring. Crozier and Walters fly for screamers 3 times a game often colliding with each other. Fyes still goes for his marks. As for the whole team getting punished for someone taking a mark instead of spoiling you've got to be kidding yourself or you don't understand sarcastic font

Drubbing he lost his spot to youth. No one wanted to see him finish his career through the wafl. The best thing he could do was find a new home
