Chris Bond has, understandably, been criticized for our recruiting failures. Our current list is looking very promising and I'll give him credit for that.

It's September and our season was over in June. I'll give him credit for that.

I'd be more expansive on that and share it with the coach.

We've only recruited one key forward in 7 years. I'll give him credit for that.

Give it a rest Spocker.

"he does play for free kicks some times (at least once every game). "

He goes in hard for the ball, gets down low for the ball and gets his body behind the ball. When someone jumps into his back, of course he is going to fall face first into the ground. Staging??? When someone clotheslines him (most teams have worked out he will get 1 free in 15 so it is worth the effort to take him around the neck) of course his head is going to fly back. Staging???? I DONT think so.

The thing about Walters is that he does duck his head. But he does it not to draw the free, but to evade the tackle. When the tackler takes his head, he should get the free. Its not like he waits for the tackle, shrugs his shoulders and buckles at the knees.

More often than not he does evade the tackle, which should mean if he was being tackled correctly, he would be getting free kicks for ducking.

Just to jump back to that anonymous Adelaide article lauding their drafting 'success' - well I went back over that period (2006 - 2016) to see to whole picture.

And the answer is....

Adelaide would have to have the WORST record in the comp in retaining their early draft picks. See below:

2006 1st pick (14 overall) James Sellar 21 games then traded to Melbourne in 2012

2007 1st pick (10) Patrick Dangerfield - now @ Geebung

2008 1st pick (10) Phil Davis - now GWS Co-captain

2011 1st pick (27) Sam Kerridge - Carltank

2014 1st pick (14) Jake Lever - ?? but not Adelaide

So in the 11 drafts from 2006 to 2016, we can take out 2015 & 2016 coz the new blokes are on 2 year contracts (might be worth keeping an eye on Jordan Galluci & Wayne Milera over the next few seasons though!), we can also take out 2012 & 2013 as they were banned from the first round over their shonky 'contract' with Tippett - after he left for Sydney (as a side note, he was their 2nd pick in 2006).

So out of 7 drafts they've lost (or about to lose) 5 of their first draft picks.

No wonder they've gotten good at turning sows ears into silk purses - they're hopeless at hanging onto the 'silk purses' they've picked in the first place!

Now before you all launch into how crap some of (ok, most of) our first round draft picks have turned out (I.e. Clayton Collard, Mora, Pitt, Simpson) during the same period - ours haven't worked out for anyone else either.

Palmer's the only one who fits into the category (Sheridan might soon, too) but we got Crozier - who has performed at least as well for us as Palmer has for GWS/Carlton.

You need to stay on topic Jason. Don't wander off on a tangent like that when things get interesting.

Going off topic however, from the west top 10 Wa picks

Brandon Starcevich, East Perth
Starcevich isn’t the most highly-skilled draft prospect in the WAFL colts system, but what he lacks in that area he makes up for with grit and determination.
A contested-ball beast, the East Perth youngster made his mark at the championships with his work in the forward line, bobbing up when needed to throw his weight around.
His last game was easily his best, helping WA get to the line with 22 touches, eight tackles and five clearances.
If a club needs polish, he may not be their man. But Starcevich’s hunger for the contest, a key factor in many clubs’ recruiting strategies, cannot be denied.

Can anyone give an honest appraisal of his prospects? Seems like a Darcy type risk, but could he do the job up front?

I don't blame him moving, last thing he needs is a sniping knee to his leg in the coaches box and get gobbed on as he falls over in pain.

RM, don't blame me - I didn't bring up the anonymous 'Adelaide are recruiting 'geniuses'' article! I just exposed it for the crock that it was.

But to stay on your off-topic tangent, are you suggesting we recruit young Starcevich as a poorly-skilled, hard tackling forward? Didn't we just offload one of those to Collonwood last year?

Unless you're looking at the long game and hoping we get a couple of decent years out of him and then let him go as an UFA to a Vic club for a concessional draft pick we'll use on bringing a better quality (and significantly younger) WA kid back home?

Your genius is clearly a slow burn, RM
