Adelaide did win in 1998,from 5th spot, in a different finals format (McIntyre Final 8 system). Where the two lowest-ranked losers are eliminated from the finals, while the two highest-ranked winners progress straight to Week 3. Adelaide lost to Melb in week 1 yet qualified to play Sydney in week 2 and the rest is history.Since 2000, the finals have been conducted under the eponymous AFL final eight system. Basically designed to give higher ranked teams an easier path to the premiership. So if you're an interstate team and not in the top 4, goodluck winning the Cup.

Bla bla bla. They played 4 weeks of finals, two of those in Melbourne. Nothing that can't be done now if you're good enough.

It wasn't long ago that people claimed you couldn't win a premiership from any state unless you finished top 4. Then that happened and you added 'from outside Victoria'.

It's not the system. It's that if you finish 5th then there are usually 4 teams better than you. In this case, West Coast weren't going to win a premiership because the were 7 teams better than them.
