Morgan,
The "Victorian midfielder" started in 2010 (first year post Phil Smart) in which we drafted 3 Vic players. (Pitt, Michie & Mellington), followed by 2011 in which our first two picks were Sheridan & Crozier (both from Vic)
By excluding those 2 years from your analysis you have skewed the statistics to your argument that its over blown.
if we look at the last 7 years, back to the 2010 draft, we have made 26 national draft selections. Breakdown is as follows:
Mids: 12 (Pitt, Michie, Sheridan, Neale, Sutcliff, Simpson, Weller, Blakely, Langdon, Deluca, Tucker, Balic)
Defenders: 7 (Forster, Smith, Pearce, Collins, Logue, Cox, Ryan)
Forwards: 6 (Mellington, Crozier, Duffy, Apeness, Grey, Yarran)
Ruck: 1 (Darcy)
Vic: 13
WA: 6
SA: 4
Tas: 2
Qld: 1
You can see clearly how the perception that our recruiters target Vic & Mids is arrived.
If we exclude last year when we made a concerted effort to target key position players as they finally realised this as a deficiency the figures are, of 22 selections 2010-15
Midfielders: 12
Defenders: 4
Forwards: 6
Ruck: 0
Vic: 11
WA: 5
SA: 3
Tas: 2
Qld: 1
If we go further into where the picks took place, our first picks for 2010-2015 were as follows:
Mids: 5 (3xVic, WA, Qld)
Def: 0
Fwd: 1 (Vic)
Ruck: 0
our second picks in the same period:
Mid: 3 (2xVic, WA)
Def: 2 (Vic, Tas)
Fwd: 1 (Vic)
So Combining of our first 2 picks over a 6 year period 2010-2015 looks like this:
Mids: 8 (5xVic, 2xWA, Qld)
Def: 2 (Vic, Tas)
Fwd: 2 (Vic)
Ruck: 0
If 8 of 12 selections are Vic & or Mids, you can see why some on dockerland express this opinion.
Thankfully last year our list managers seemed to finally realise that we needed a spine to go with those midfielders.
what the analysis shows though is that in the last 7 years we have drafted only one Key position forward (Apeness).
