TOPIC: Reality check

What are people's views on the rebuild? Do we really only need a couple of talented additions plus development to again become a force? I don't see it on our list. I see what they are, later round draft picks, making up numbers (other than a couple, Langdon/Darcy). I think we have more bottoming out to go.

I'd like to hear other people's thoughts and strategies.

We have a lot of potential. Players like Cox Ryan Langdon Darcy Pearce (to add to the Hills, Fyfe and co) and a few more look like they might be top shelf . A lot of others could be very good soldiers. We might have the basis for a very good team that just needs a few more but we don't know yet.

I think we have become far too reliant on Sandi's dominance in the ruck and as good as our midfield is they haven't been coached to try and read where the opposing ruck is going to put the ball, this was evident in the last two thirds of this year, as good as Hodor was, he only split the ruck 50 50 and our midfield was found out, Hodor has about 4 years of development ahead of him before he becomes a truely dominant force so once Sandi retires, we are still going to have a gap where unless we can learn to poach more clearances we are going to struggle.
That said, if we had a decent game plan I reckon we could match most teams as was evident by our close losses to many top 8 teams this year.

Have to admit I'd forgotten about long term injuries like Pearce and Apness. Just not sure how far the "potential" players will develop. What would be the side in two years time?

We have a 5 year plan for the rebuild.

The last team I can remember having a 5 year plan for a rebuild was Richmond when they appointed Wallace to do the rebuild. I think they won their first final last night after commencing that 5 year rebuild and thats because Geelong played like under 11s. Possibly the worst and least skilled I've ever seen them play.

Not really sure I like the idea of 5 year rebuilds myself. I prefer the 'lets not bottom out approach' used by Sydney or Hawthorn

Boom and bust lists are the product of short sighted and useless management.

The teams that are still on top, are still on top, despite not having low draft picks.

The Tiggies won 8 games last year - we won 8 games this year.
The Tiggies will probably go into a GF - we should be in a GF next year.

My thinking is: if the Tiggies can do this, surely we can too. That's not delusional, it's a reality.

no 'should' about it. And I hate Richmond (the club)

I reckon we are making moves in the right direction there are indicators that we may have unearthed some good young talent. There is still so much work to do and a lot of things have to go right. There is a big difference between a young player showing glimpses, to becoming a consistent week in week out performer, let alone a player that can consistently tear a game apart.
We need to recruit more top end talent. If you ask supporters of other clubs about our list, there are not many that they would say they want.
Coukd still be a couple of years before we know if it will be successful.
Improvement next year may not necessarily mean many more wins, but may look like us being genuinely competitive for longer and eliminating the pathetic capitulations.

Well said drubbing about 'boom and bust lists".
We tried to overreach in 2016 after over inflating our true position in 2015 , which was built on a great start. By the time 2015 finished we were well on the downside.
Takes a very astute operations department to see the decline of many of our soldiers that year and recruit accordingly.
I think even by the start of this year we still held the misplaced idea we could be a force. I say that simply due to our reluctance to try new players in the preseason and our aged side in the first 2 rounds. It was only after an embarrassing belting that even ross Lyon and the leadership group could not hide from he reluctantly tried youth in substantial rebuild numbers. But once again him or the leadership group managed to turf the young players out by the time they played Adelaide only to be even more embarrassingly belted. I think they got the lay of the land by the half way mark.
As for the 2 disgraceful and humiliating performances against Sydney and Richmond , maybe in hindsight it was not that dreadful given the start to both teams finals campaigns.

Oh steady on. How "disgraceful and humiliating" were Geelong last night and Essendon right now?

It's time we got some perspective about those two "horror" games. Sydney and Richmond were white hot, we were spent, we'd lost the bulk of our mids, I could go on.

Just because we're an easy target for the Vic media and the Slimophants doesn't mean we should pile on too.
