It was interesting to note that in one of our later games in the season the point was made of our lack of tackling numbers and pressure. In the loss of Mayne, de Boer and Barlow we actually lost a significant proportion of tackles per game. Our current guys need to be taught and encouraged to improve this aspect of their game.

We lost Brady late in the year, it's understandable that the tackle count would be low. Suban and Tucker have been great tacklers for us though.

I like that Stevie J was dropped for Le Pig, in fact I love it - when things get serious, ya gotta play the best ya got.

Yeah I suppose we were able to get some games into Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Suban, Pearce and perhaps Crozier instead of Barlow and De Boer.

The thing with a rebuild is that you can't get rid of half your list straight away, but the club is not well served by playing too many 27 year old role players (no matter how wonderful their hair). Matty's problem was that he came out of contract at the wrong time (unlike guys like Suban, Dawson and D Pearce who had time to run on a contract).

MdB landed in the best possible spot. GWS are a bunch of arrogant, front-running show ponies. In those circumstances you don't want your 22nd man to be another aging show pony like Stevie J. You're much better off having a hard-as-nails team man to put himself about and shows-up his more talented teammates so they step up.

So because Pearce and Suban? still have another year to go on their contracts we should keep them again no matter if they offer very little, in fact less than people we have delisted. Particularly as the are the same age or older than those delisted.
A hard as nails team man is something we're particularly short on. I guess Suban and possibly Grey. Couldn't imagine either getting a game at GWS.

Yes, it's not a slight at all - it's noble and embiggening. Watching your team play crap, aimless football and getting beaten mercilessly by record breaking margins makes you feel that something great is happening - as a member you really feel part of something. Matty is missing out on that with a footy finals campaign.

Throw something away then find you need it so spend some years trying to chance on finding something that can, maybe, do it.

Especially as he's just 27 and played 150 games (26 and 140-odd when we dumped him). Very likely entering the best years of his career for a player of his type.

I have never understood why he wasn't a permanent member of our team, playing the sort of role GWS have his playing. As for moving him on - it was insanity.

Some rose coloured glasses on here. Deboer was all guts and heart no doubt. But there were many games with few stats other than clangers. Probably line ball whether to keep when rebuilding.
