Walter the baker
A large number of Dockers fans asked the same existential question for almost a decade.

I'm hoping the exhibition of torpedoes triggers a thought or two in a few coaches heads.
The perfect tool to break down this boring, fustercluck , 36-players-at-one-end 'footy' that we currently endure.
Couple of 70m torps will soon open the game up a bit.
Great skill and great crowd pleaser too!

I agree. If you look at a 60s or 70s game of footy - there's plenty of bombs. And why not. It seems by the mid-80s onwards they became a rarity.

Sure, quite of lot of the time in those old games (even top teams in GFs) players would just bomb it forward hoping their blokes up-field could do something with it. (oh hang on - hasn't that been the Dockers forward entry strategy for 3 years?)

Those sort of tactics got the flick when the schoolteachers took over the coaching ranks. Can't have anyone doing anything outside the box in the classroom can we? Same attitude to coaching.

60s or 70s teams wouldn't stand a chance against modern teams. Well, maybe in the brawling department.

Despite their entertainment value, long kicks to 50-50 situations disappeared for a reason. And despite appearances, coaches aren't total idiots.

The long kicks disappeared because the schoolteachers thought that the "keepy off" the 4 -6 year olds were playing in the schoolyard would be an easier tactic to teach than real footy, where not everything goes according to a curriculum.

Yeah...I'm not so sure Jim.
We seem to be spending a whole lotta time trying to find a key tall forward, who we can pass to with confidence.

The few that have been tried -and I'll even include Pav and just about every other tall forward in the current comp - struggle to have 'set shot kicking for goal percentages' greater than 60%...maybe 70 at best.

So put in the hands of a good exponent of the torp, I'd reckon they couldn't do much worse.

And no need to bother about getting it to the tall forward 30 m out from goal. Get it to somewhere between center and half forward, and "Malcolm Blight" it.

Pure efficiency!! No buggerizing around with sideways 20m kicks to someone in a worse position.

And if they miss, well.... we'd all be happy seeing them try...!!

Problem is, is that it's an ancient art, and I doubt even kids are allowed to 'have a go' much these days.... Little kids yes, but in the teenage comps they are to busy trying to follow complex AwFL game plans and set plays nowadays. Tragic!!

Agree Cletus, they need to find the kids that can play footy, and then see if they can understand complex game plans, instead of finding the kids that can understand complex game plans THEN see if they can play footy.

Like it CA!

! Saves a whole lotta running, and a whole lot of effing about!

The floods and the congestion would soon disappear if the boot was sunk in a bit more.

And don't tell me crowds wouldnt love it. !!

Would probably also bring back pack marks, I reckon....

I just loved what they did for the EJ Whitten game, torpedoes. Absolutely loved it.
