Well, we attracted B.Hill (triple Premiership player), Hamling (Premiership player 2016), McCartney & Kersten last season after finishing 16th with 4 wins and Fyfe out of contract at the end of the next season. All this after playing in a Prelim in 2015.

I would have thought the promise so many youngsters showed this year (think Darcy, Cox, Ryan & Logue), along with Fyfe signing on for 6 more years and practically every other player we want (including several Victorians) re-signed plus (as much as it might sh#t many Dockerlanders) probably the best facilities in the AFL at our disposal - that we would very much be a 'destination' club. Particularly for WA-bred players.

Missing out on McGovern (who hadn't made any mutterings of being home-sick - from my memory) is less a reflection on Freo and more a reflection of him showing loyalty to the club who picked him up in the 3rd round @ 43 in 2014 (we picked up Lachie Weller @ 14 & Connor Blakely @ 34) and the chance to enjoy sustained success.

P.S. Having just read what, even for The Worst, can only be described as one-sided BS (here) coz we 'missed out' on M. McGovern - I'm even more convinced of my earlier thoughts. Seeing how his brother plays for the Weagles and they are apparently in Premiership-mode (cough-cough) - I thought it was a 'kick in the teeth' to them that little brother chose to stay in the most boring city (prob State, excluding the Barossa) in the country instead of suiting up with big bro'. The depth of hatred of Freo within the WA footy media knows no bounds.

Paul must have been a bit busy with concert dates to front up and play for us, but at least the rest made an effort.

Zorro, has there been any real evidence of Freo throwing Fort Knox at McGovern? These stories are thrown up every year, and every year they are proven false in the end. Gillon is right, some of these hacks should be lined up against a wall.

If you're a WA product and there's a need for you to want to come home, you'd try and exhaust all avenues. To say we're no longer a destination club after a couple of 100 pt floggings and the hierarchy there doesn't enthuse confidence for the future is a tad shortsighted. I echo what Jason said that there are many who've signed on, Fyfe himself could've gotten more from all reports elsewhere. His signature alone is a sign of optimism for the future and like Pav before him, will be one of best captains the club will have. At the end of the day, contrary to popular belief, the FFC is still a club that have kept players they've drafted over the journey. Not too many have left.

I think we dodged a bullet with McGovern but we do need to capitalise on the go home factor for good WA players. The time to throw everything at Hogan was last year before he re-signed, there's no point throwing anything at him now until the next time he's out of contract or he'll cost far more than he's worth.

It's the same with B Hill last year, we could be getting him for free or close to it this year as he came out of contract instead of throwing a second round draft pick away. Getting him for this year or next made no difference to our rebuild (and has probably hurt Brad given the way he now runs backwards and sideways under RL's game plans) but we could have held pick 23 (Witherden from Brisbane who is in the running for the rising star this year) or held a second round pick this season in a supposed very strong draft as well as getting B Hill.

Throwing everything at players early, especially when they are WA players who intend to come home is a mistake. You get them out of contract when there's far less wiggle room for their current club to negotiate with and use your draft picks to bring in more quality, topping up with bought players once the rebuild is finished to fill in the gaps.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Has Lyon shown he has half a clue what to do with players who can play?

I admit I never saw Hill play much at Hawks, apart from the GF, but in Lyon's team he looks just like a faster Danyle Pearce.

I think Lyon showed in 2013 he was capable of getting a great deal out of some average players.

Brad Hill has been magnificent in some games this year but like some of our other experienced players hit the wall of in a few of the last few rounds.

I thought Lobb has been carrying injuries, not on the outer because of form.

Best contested mark in the AwFL and a good straight kick. Lobb's a titan (and would be my #1 forward target).

No McGovern? Good. Really not a proven main man up forward. Have to use pick 5...maybe Naughton? He is 194cm and apparently shows real promise. Not sure of any other WA draft prospects. But cannot give up pick 5, no way. Out of all our taller forwards Taberner is still the only one who has shown some aptitude for a contested mark. As inconsistent as he is we need to hang on to him...

Always remember one thing, Bizkit, we (effectively) swapped Mayne for B.Hill. That is, a 28 year old (non-goal-kicking) forward who had 2 good seasons (none recently) at the back end of their career for a for a triple premiership player aged 21 with pace and (mostly) good skills who will play another 10 years for us.

Regardless of contract status - there is no way Hawthorn would have entertained such a trade. Not last year and certainly not this year. The Hawks would have let him go into the pre-season draft instead. Picking up Mayne, as Collonwood have discovered, just takes up a spot a youngster could fill.

I challenge anyone to come up with a better trade deal that Freo have been involved with?... hang on... by that I mean a trade deal where the Dockers WON. Hope that narrows the list down a bit...

Agree Jason. Best deal Freo have ever done. Feel a bit sorry for Mayne as there is talk Collingwood may pay him out, not as bad a player as being made out in Victoria.

We didn't do that Jason, they are separate things. We received pick 23 for Mayne via free agency which was great. We then threw it at B Hill when we could have gotten him cheaper which wasn't great.

Harsh Bizkit,

I think a swap of Mayne for Hill was a bit of a win just quietly. I think most clubs would do that in a heartbeat....except Collingwood of course.

I'll go back to my earlier comment that a draft pick has no intrinsic value. It's worth what it can get for you. No more, no less. Your argument is predicated on pick 23 giving a certain return that is better than what Hill delivers and due to the lack of certainty involved, I would respectfully disagree.

Potentially, we "might" have gotten a better player but Hill is a definite 'good' player. It was a good deal for us
