TOPIC: Coaches and Leadership

Fremantles coaching 'talent' is the weakest in the competition. Prior, Guerra, Hale....?? Go through the rest of the comps ass coaches and you will find a mix of 10 year level 4 coaches, ex senior coaches, ex captains of afl sides. Look at how Richmond have turned around after hiring new ass coaches (leppitsch, caracella), an experienced and respected Head of Coaching (Neale Balme) and changing gameplan and approach.

I also think we lack leadership. Fyfe is an odd ball, great player and gives his all...but he isnt 'loved'. Mundy is respected but isnt a 'follow me into battle' type.

In summation, I think we should go after talented, high performing coaches or retiring champs, including; all level 4 coaches, Dean Solomon, Ashley Prescott, Robert Harvey, Mick Mcguane, Jarred Schofield, Nick Reiwolt, Luke Hodge. We should also bring Jarrod Mcveigh in on a 3 year - 1 year playing, 2 year coaching - to provide leadership and winning mentality.

I feel that failure to do the above, or similar, will result in next year being Ross's last.

What's level 4 coach mean?

Darren Glass is going to Hawthorn. What's his level?

Fyfe will become the second-greatest captain this club has ever had.

What we need are coaches with a track record who have an idea about how things work and are confident enough, or at least diplomatic enough, to tell the senior coach when he needs to try something different. Not more interns who are afraid to get the sack and have their career ended before it starts.

Are there any good West Australian coaches out there who want to come home?

If you read my post, Fungi, you will see I listed level 4 coaches aswell as ex captains of AFL clubs and just generally talented ppl with leadership. Darren Glass fits that.

From what Truthproject has written (much of which I agree with), I assume that there is some sort of national coaching accreditation process, with various levels to indicate qualification status, and we are the only club without any assistant coaches with level 4 status? If that is true, it is absurd. If there is an accreditation process, there is no good reason not to have it as a condition of employment. I would hope at the very least that our assistant coaches are all seeking to further their qualifications?

I must say I've been impressed with the way Dean Solomon has turned things around for Gold Coast over the last three weeks. He promised a tougher attitude and the change has been remarkable. Oh wait...

So the short answer from reading that article is No, we don't have any ass coaches in the program, Sumich would have started the program with us but will finish next year.

Without being privileged enough to be drinking from the Official AFL Koolaid or whatever they pass around in the big boy's bucket up there, you'd have to wonder why any ass coach would come to Freo to work under Lyon.

There's always been a reputation of being hard on them and the turnover seems to bear that out, and as Shane says we hardly need another crop of interns to come along and have the Great Man show them the ropes of coaching 101 before they set off on a career at a real club.

Have any of Lyon's ass coaches gone on to bigger and better things at other clubs? Kirk went back to Sydney didn't he after being Lyonised.
