That's all very well, but did Hackdorn predict it?

Literally anything he doesn't predict is still a possibility.

First out the door should be the fitness and medical group. Just about worst record in the AFL for last 2 years based on available players, long term injuries, recovery times. They say they pay attention to detail in reviews so how come these guy's keep getting a gig or can't identify the problem. Port were acclaimed as having the best fitness team lead by Burgess and basically had a full squad to pick from for most of he year.

Can't remember any period that Freo have even got remotely close to having full squad availability and at times over last 2 years looked like they weren't up to the new level of AFL fitness that many clubs have reached.

Details were aired on Melb radio this morning where was highlighted the fitness and medical issues over last few years for Freo compared to most clubs was a major concern for Freo going forward.

Every club has fitness and injury issues. What keeps some in it is quality depth. You'd have to run a comparison of a few teams best 22 rated vs Freo's to establish how bad our medical team really is, or isn't.

The Dogs won from 7th without Bob Murphy, for most of 2016, considered one of their best

We've had some horrendous injuries to our "A" graders. ACLs, Broken limbs, punctured lung, prolonged calf injuries, hamstrings off the bone etc. And they seem to happened to a few all in the one season. Call it bad luck but it's certainly not bad management. I seriously doubt if other club medicos could have done miracles with our predicament. The next few seasons, if we remain relatively healthy and whilst others cop the injury curse we might actually be pretty competitive. So if you keep listening to the media enough, you'd say that our club is a basket case. Fake news.

Yeah, but people here use injuries as an excuse every year not just this year. Of course some are bad luck and unavoidable but can anyone remember a year when we we had very few injuries. As Wingman said, Port hardly had an injury all year and consequently their head of dept has been poached by Arsenal.

GC have had a terrible run but without going back over every team in every year we certainly seem to have had more bad luck than others, if that's what it is.

Roly admitted that the medical/fitness team made mistakes with Bennell. Surely a guy breaking his leg whilst running laps(Pearce)was avoidable from a supposed top staff. It also seems pretty obvious that Sandi was rushed back too early from a hamstring strain, and consequently tore it completely .

I'm with Wingman, if we're dinkum about being a force again quickly and we're going to do the usual end of year review and move on players, then we should be doing a review into the fitness team and programme as well.

I'd be interested if those stats included Mora. Not sure 3 ACL's can be prevented by Fitness/Medical staff. Also, Bennell had calf issues at GC and they continued when at Freo. Look at Delidio at GWS - persistent calf issues resulted in him missing most of this year.

As other's have mentioned, I'm not sure broken legs (Fyfe & A.Pearce - twice each, but different places), broken ribs (Sandi), torn-off-the-bone hamstrings (Sandi & Ballas - both on the wrong side of 30 and had these issues before), dislocated shoulders (S.Hill & Blakely) and knee injuries (Apeness, Walters, Z.Clarke & Langdon) suffered this year are the result of poor medical/fitness staff.

Also factor in Balic came to the club with a serious wrist injury in 2015 (he was touted at a top 10 pick before the injury) which took the entire 2016 season to get right.

Usually a run of soft tissue injuries and the re-injuring of those, would indicate poor management from a medical & fitness perspective - think our 2011 season. Brady Grey & Sandi both re-injured hamstrings - but Sandi has had issues with those for a few seasons now.

Plus I would add it seemed the medical/fitness staff did a fantastic job keeping, at least, Lachie Neale on the paddock for all but one game even though he was carrying some significant injuries to his groin & shoulder. Same could be said of Fyfe with his bruised sternum.

One thing, however, that never changes is the footy media's inclination to sink the boot into the Docker's at every opportunity - particularly when they can selectively use 'statistics' to do it.

Fake news at its worse.

Harvey was critisised for his management of injured players, maybe he was gauging the injury recovery period to what might have been expected from Essendon at the time??
Playing surfaces and travel load unique to WA sides should be considered because the injury toll hasn't hit any better.
