Eventually, trading down in the draft to secure a greater number of talented players is exactly what we should be looking to do; but as hypen suggests it depends where you are picking and how you evaluate the talent at that spot. For example, if you think there are 6 gun players in the draft, and you don't really mind which player you get, then keeping the pick at 5 to add A-grade talent is probably the right call. If you think there are only a few A-listers in the draft and none are likely to make it down to pick 5, then going for a two-for-one makes the world of sense.
Last year we gave up pick 3 - Hugh McCluggage - and as a result brought in Logue, McCarthy and Hamling. Time will tell, but Bond is backing that combination of players to be better for Freo than a single player in McCluggage. I didn't mind that play, but it could easily look foolish if it doesn't come off.
If there was a strong key forward that could fall to 5, I'd keep that pick. But if not, I'd be inclined to see what we could get for it. I probably wouldn't trade down for Mitch McGovern. He's a nice player, but if you put an in-form McCarthy in McGovern's slot in Adelaide, I reckon he looks a million bucks. What Freo need is a big lug to kick it to. Another mid-sized forward isn't going to make much difference.
