www.afl.com.au/news/2017-08-23/veteran-s...nder-keen-to-play-on

As much as we miss having a big power forward, I reckon that our inability to generate any form of attacking play from our back line is just as big an issue. The best case scenario is getting Wilson from GWS, but if that falls through, I propose we consider picking up McVeigh, if the Swans aren't willing to give him a new contract and he can be acquired for peanuts. I would like us do what slime did with Mitchell, sign him up for a year with the view to move him into a coaching role after that. He is extremely well respected, has excellent disposal efficiency, makes the right decisions more often than not, and can be the old wise head (or coach on the field even) to mentor our band of young defenders, especially now that it appears more likely than not that Jonno will be hanging up his boots at year's end. And when he moves into the coaching role in the following season, I reckon that he just work out to be Kirky Mk II and provide a bit of Zen back into the coaching panel.

Only potential downside - if he plays, he will be taking valuable game time from one of our kids. And there is the question of whether he is willing to relocate out west to play his final year with a team not contending for the flag. Even so, I reckon that upsides outweighs the downsides...am I going cray cray, or may this just work?

And think how much fun Ballas would have by kissing him all the time...

McVeigh might be a great pickup if you thought you were contending next year and need to boost your options down the back.

For us, no.

He could help with the guidance and development of the young ones .....a bit what Hodge did with Hawthorn this year

I'm sure he has a good retirement fund in place, can't see any sense in us topping it up.

purplepower,

if you want to get real help in the guidance and development of the young ones, get Hodge as an Ass Coach.

Using up draft picks on pensioners just tells me we didn't learn anything from drafting Sylvia, Gumbleton etc.

It just seems that we have to pick up every footballer that can't get a contract with his old club. Hint: if they're not good enough for the mob that knows them best, they're probably not good enough for anybody else

This guy could be the difference between finishing 14th and 11th.

There's scope for this within our AFL follicly challenged playing cap. I like the idea as an assistant coach, if he's indicated an interest in doing so...very experienced campaigner.

That old brick along the side of my house could coach players better than what's at Freo right now - as such, McVeigh would be an improvement. But the dog up my street is pretty quick after a tennis ball in the park, his pick-up is fantastic. I would give him a run before McVeigh as a ball getter.

Why get mcveigh as a fabric player when we burnt Barlow, de Boer and the Gu last year?

Because McVeigh ball use is excellent (especially by foot) and can be damaging off the back line, whereas Barlow and co, for all their effort and heart, can't really be regarded as elite kicks..

However, the main attraction for me is his mentorship, and him moving on to be an assistant coach after that...if he is only going to cost a round 5 pick or something, surely it's a much better use of that pick rather than something completely speculative?

Poly, you aren't your usual positive self these past few weeks. You need to watch the movie of the book that gave you your monika...

It's pointless thinking about getting McV as a player. If we'd kept Gu, DeBo and MickB next year would've been worse than what some are already anticipating. Games into the next generation is what 2017 was about.

According to what you hear and read over the years Roly is one of the hardest coaches to work with and for. Maybe that's why we've got a list of ass coaches with no experience.
