How hard is it, is this day and age, to realise that getting pissed and racially abusing a player is A) a dumb idea and B) a dumb idea.

This isn't the 1830's any more. We all have enough education to know that behaviour like that is deeply rooted in stupidity, yet we still get the morons turning up to the footy. Even if you are stupid enough to think that way, why are they stupid enough to actually open their mouths.

Straight up - Racial abuse is Ar$e clown territory. I have no time for it and people who perpetrate it should have the book thrown at them.

What gets me confused these days is some of the things that are said and are construed as racist?

"You can stop running, the police aren't chasing you" That is something I have flippantly said to mates before, as a wise crack. It's not something I ever considered or thought of as being a racist slur on someone?

Obviously I wasn't party to the conversation and maybe other things were said that gave it racial context before hand. I'm assuming this is the case as the person involved has rung up to apologise.

But as it is being reported it leaves me wondering what is witty and funny and what is "Rascist" and how do you inadvertently avoid saying something that would be construed as racist instead of witty banter.

Here's a tip then. If you see an aboriginal bloke that you don't know, running laps around a football oval at a football game, don't make one of your "witty" remarks to him which overlaps with something that has historic been used as a negative racial stereotype.

This is somewhat off topic, but why do we even bother to refer to football players as Aboriginal. I can't recall the last time I hear a player called Italian or Greek or whatever, only if there is a legitimate sports-related reason to call them by their origin such as Irish Gaelic football recruit. I'm not saying anything about the use of the term outside of a sporting venue, but I think there is no reason to refer to an AFL player by their race, religion or country of origin.
