I keep going back to 2013 GF, if nothing else just to satisfy my optimism. We got to the GF with Sandi missing over half the season, came back in RD. 15. AA Luke got injured in Rd 15, came back in the QF,Pav only played 12 games, was injured in Rd 3, came back in Rd 15, missed in Rds 17-19. Three of our star power players and yet we were able to cover their absence. In the GF, both teams had 22 scoring shots, the last qtr after B. Hill kicked a goal in the 12min mark of the last qtr, they're last goal for the game, the score was 77-46. From then on, Freo dominated with 2 goals and 4 behinds kicked. Its history now, but our season was marred by heavy injuries and had we kicked straighter, the talk of the town would be much different. IMO, defence is what win you games. Most of your scores are generated from the defensive half. And most defensive outfits are built around hardened, experienced players which we currently lack. That's my take.

It'd be difficult to mount an argument that we had 'recruited badly' in selecting Morabito (4 knee recons) and Pitt (undiagnosed heart condition) as our first round picks. I would agree Simpson was a poor selection but many on here would say he oozed talent and was prematurely delisted. Eye of the beholder and all that... Roberton was a good player but went home for sympathetic reasons and the club helped him. Ruffles blew his knee twice. Apart from Forster most of the rest were picks from mid 30s onwards or free agents which cost you nothing.

Part of our problem in not having luck/success with our first round picks since Morabito is that since our Pitt selection (12 from memory) we've picked around 16 - 18 as our first pick and there are no guarantees there.

The most successful sides in the comp over the last 15 years are no doubt well coached but in Hawthorn and Geelong benefitted from a great draft (with high end picks) and incredible father/son selections respectively. Sydney are the third side and they have been looked after in various ways over that period.

See you at the new joint RM to watch the new crop progress.

Now we have no defence , we have no attack the middle is not firing .
It will get better fore sure but why are we in this situation ?
have we been able to cover injuries , have we got enough experience , are our experienced players to old , have our young players have been thrown in to early .
This it the problem it has not been done properly , no real thought behind it . this is being made up as it goes .
Say what you like , yes it will get better one day but at the moment it is a shambles .

We played a very different kind of football in 2013. It wasn't given to free running football. It bludgeoned the opposition into their back half, and locked them in there.

Less work required by Pavlich and McPharlin.

Our midfield engine room was experienced, yet younger than it is now. 211 and Mundy are nearing the end.

They achieved that with a core of honest toilers (think Muzz, Fist, Pearce, Clarke, Spurr, Mayne) sticking to a plan. A plan that required high rotation numbers - which the since AFL reduced, in order to stop teams playing this sort of football.

Lyon has looked lost for ideas ever since.

I know you keep going back to 2013 Jezza. That's the problem, we're actually closer to the 2018 season.

You know that Split Enz song, History Never Repeats?

What was that stat that someone put up-12 wins from our last 46 games. That's a terrible result no matter who the coach is, particularly one that you say is one of the best in the business.

Flag, I included Mora and Pitt only because they were not to play many games for us. Simpson was badly handled, and a coacjh like Neesham would never have allowed that situation develop. Roberton, never did anything much here, so had to be included.

It's a long way for me to get to the new joint, so don't know when I will see you there. Have many good memories of games at Subi, the best being when it was still a footy oval, not a stadium. But that's progress I suppose.

Yep once he got the boot they all took his ideas and claimed them as bold new game plans.

Neesham didn't have the skill level in his squad to effectively execute his game plan. Maybe Lyon doesn't either. Neesham had an excuse. Lyon doesn't.

People keep talking about 2013. 2012 is the one we should have won. Hawks weren't ready. Go and look at Lyon's coaching performance in the 2012 finals series and tell me he wasn't profligate with the very hard earned opportunity that presented. Completely burnt the year in the Adelaide game.

Ok Corporal, how would you replace Pav? Nice words to throw around but what is the actual process you are suggesting?

Pav was a great footballer, and a great leader, plus he lasted the full distance. He was selected at number 4 but was arguably better than that. Ahead of him were Aaron Fiora, Paul Hasleby, and Josh Fraser so he really should have gone earlier.

As far as I know there are very few ways to get a top few pick, and even then it's going to be a gamble.
(i) Start a club in NSW. (Not possible for us, I'd say.)
(ii) Get the wooden spoon or come close. (This invites criticism, eg, of the club list management.)
(iii) Trade a really good player. (Probably we would need to offer Fyfe. Wouldn't go down well.)

The other way of cracking a Pav is to try out a lot of lower value picks, train them up and hope that one is comes good. Unfortunately marquee full forwards are rare beasts so this is by no means a foolproof method. If I recall correctly we have had a number of attempts with the roll the dice option and haven't cracked it yet. (So have all the other clubs who don't have one of the league's top few full forwards who can play as a quality mid.)

Interestingly, Pav was just a little small to be a power full forward but he made up the height deficit with nous. So maybe we made the error of selecting the full-forward shaped guys, I guess.

So Noddy maybe you could please explain why we played like we have for the last 2 years .

Or better still why we have lost all our skills , defence ,attack , effort . can't tackle , mark ,short pass , absolutely no confidence .

Please explain .

Jimb, we currently have a FF who plays like an AA mid, but the coach won't play him at FF.

Ok, that's it, bring back Neesham. Problem solved.

Either that, or get some trained bandicoots into the team, that would work too.

CA, you can say that reduced rotations has cruelled Roly's game plan, but I'm not so sure. Looking for sides which play with manic intensity exerting extreme pressure on the ball carrier? Sydney do that now - reduced rotations and all.

But the point about being able to apply manic pressure is that it has to work. If there is a weak link or your system is faulty, and the opposition get through, all that effort is wasted and you just look tired and slow.

Same going forward. The teams that win lots seem to just get "easy" goals. Because the ball gets from one end of the ground to the other without any stuff-ups.

So I'd say Roly can have a high intensity manic pressure game plan that works and doesn't kill the players, but we need to be really good at it. That's the bit he hasn't got right so far, but I'm sure he's looking at the cattle at his disposal and figuring out what they can do, and how he needs to adjust the game plan to suit.
