Our coach dug the hole he is in . I hope he can get out of it for everyone's sake .
A lot of people here think he has lost the plot and needs to get a new shovel . I serenely hope he can .
I hate seeing what is going on . I am not going to bugger off and I wont stop supporting Freo but I will continue to put my opinion across when I see things going sideways .

The bigger issue is the powers that be. Richmond are the probably a template for inept management over a long period of time. If they're clueless at the top, it'll trickle down.

Various parts of management get involved in managing the list, deciding who and how to draft and trade, and the hiring of assistants to Lyon. He has a say in all that, but it's not an autocracy, as he loves to point out when things get pointy.

A lot of the current issues are down to these factors, and not just coaching. If you're going to rebuild, do it properly. Not all supporters are dumb enough to think that only players and the coaching of a game plan, is the answer.

Aren't we just replenishing our list. In 2016, 10-12 players were replaced and that'll continue in 2017. After 2 years, over half our list from the 2012-2015 era would have gone. Perhaps the reason why Fyfe signed was because he sees success not too far away. Probably why Pav, Mundy also signed on before the Roly era. With free agency, if the players don't see a successful future they'll walk. The faith shown by our captain and others who have followed since tells me there's plenty of upside.

All Freo supporters have faith in the fact that we are going to get better . We cant understand how low we have come to this point , we should not be here , if this is the only way to get decent draft picks for any club there is something very wrong . Go strait to the bottom to get to the top .
as has been said before it doesn't have to be this way . Very strange .

But rebuilding can't really be happening all the time. Lets say you are in line for a premiership and identify the need for a new small forward to replace your current small forward in 2-3 years. But your rivals, who are in exactly the same position as you get a ready-made small forward. Halfway through the season, your small forward gets injured/suspended/loses form, and the same thing happens to your rivals. Now where has your forward planning got you? If you are up against a side who are as good as you, and willing to throw everything at the current year and maybe the one after it, then you can't afford the luxury of long term planning.

Hence the "premiership window", and the rebuild.

Of course there are exceptions, like Sydney, who get looked after something chronic by the AFL, and to a lesser extent sides like Adelaide and WC who seem to always get the big home ground umpiring advantage.

jimb2 . Not rebuilding all the time .
Building , giving young ones a chance , testing ,trying different players in other positions .
Good drafting .
Being able to change things when the opposition gets on top . being flexible , these are what should be happening all the time . to cover a position when an injury accrues .
By the time and if you get to finals the team will be in good stead to handle any situation .
We haven't been able to cover injured players with other players . We have had players , potentially good players that never get a game in the Freo team , they should have had game time here and there to give them the experience to step up when needed .
Experienced trainers and support staff as well .

This is what is needed if we are going to win a GF . We didn't have this and we didn't win .
The teams that win G.finals have this .
This is what is going to give our team sustained competitiveness in the future and lead us to our first Grand Final .
All this takes years to get together . Lyons tried with what he had , he came close but without the solid base he fell short . from here it is going to take years before we get anywhere near where we need to be .

It was discussed on Dockerland for years. Unless they're not as smart as the collective wisdom on here (which I would also believe)

I think too many people are approaching this from the wrong perspective. Its not a case of whether Roly is a good coach or a bad coach. Clearly he is reasonably good but he does have obvious flaws.

The question should be is he good enough to won a flag? We have had several years to form an opinion on this and I have reached the conclusion that he probably isn't good enough. His failure to adapt to the changes in the game, failure to forward plan team development (shared with others of course) and his failure to respond to events on game day are what leads me to this conclusion.

He simply seems so resistant to change, it seems he is living in a different reality.

Yes I expect his time table to play finals after 4 years of rebuild is likely to be met but I see nothing that indicates we will be in a position to beat everybody else in the competition when we cannot effectively play against a skillful team playing an outside game. Until he can demonstrate that aspect, at the very least, we are just going to repeat our past disappointments, albeit while paying him 1.2 million a year for not getting there.

Rat, getting RoLy a new shovel just means he can dig deeper and faster. I don't see that solving the problem. Save the money on the shovels (we have enough in the coaches box already) and get some real assistant coaches.

As for rebuilds, we are where we are now, because for 6 or 7 years we recruited badly, with the likes of Sylvia, Anthony, Mora, Ruffles, C Hall, Houghton, Chrichton, Bollers , Roberton, Faulks Pitt, Michie, Mellington, Sheridan, Forster, Sutcliffe, Lower, Simpson, T Smith, Duffy, Hannath, Moller and Gumbleton, apologies if I have missed anyone.

This left a big hole between the Pav, Luke, Carrs, Bell Farmer era and what we have now, which over the last 4 years has been a very successful drafting/trading period. No-one would have expected 23 players and trades from the end of 2014 to this year to be playing on a regular basis.

I am happy to continue to support thes players through thick and thin, knowing we have a future. I would suggest that the new stadium is very timely, because anyone that wants to jump ship and get on a bandwagon instead will find seats available with the mob up the road.
