TOPIC: But what a quarter to be alive!

FDB But what a quarter to be alive! 6 years 8 months ago #1

FDB
It was short, I spent much of it preparing fuel for the evening's fire with half an eye on the downstairs telly, but that was a quarter for the ages.

And if someone can explain what went wrong after that, I'd be grateful.

Look if we'd kicked another 20 goals we would have been right in that match.

I hope you didn't miss the final seconds, FDB. A dodgy free kick to Richmond, followed by an even dodgier 50 metre penalty, resulting in a goal right on the siren to bring the margin back to 104 points - never in the history of football has there been a more uplifting and inspiring end to an era!

Yeah, everyone blames the players being confused by the game plan, confused by the coach, confused by the opposition, but maybe they are simply confused by the rule interpretations.

the umpiring was SHITHOUSE and I wish someone at the club would come out and say that in the media !!!
I try to look at it fairly but they lost me on Sunday. I'm frustrated!!

The thing is that even during that wonderful 17 minutes, when we played some of our best football for a long time, we still butchered our inside 50s, missed some very gettable set shots, and gave up a couple of cheap ones at the other end to totally relieve the pressure on our opponent.

In short, even at our best it's a case of extreme effort for little reward.

That is the biggest disappointment. When you see players like Fyfe, Mundy and S Hill looking at the umpire and questioning his call, it is obvious that it is not just a looking for excuses comment. Then to have to put up with that moron Dwayne Russell calling for free kicks to Richmond every time the ball came to ground was even more frustrating. I know the umpiring wasn't worth 104 points, but over the course of the season we have copped more than anyone else from the umpires.

Before you jump down my throat with stats on frees received, frees against and free kick differentials that show we are not unfairly treated by the umpires, look for a stat that shows frees that should have been paid and were not. We would be by far and away the top of that list. Just on 1 rule in the laws of the game. Illegal disposal, how many times do Freo players lay a tackle and see the opponent throw the ball away or just let it fall to the ground in front of them without a free being paid?

Rioli threw the ball in a tackle in front of goal yesterday, was released from the tackle, grabbed the ball again, was tackled again, threw the ball out again, was released , regained possession again, and at the third attempt gave a barely legal handpass which resulted in a goal.

Why would our players be bothered tackling when that is the result?

C'mon RM.....!!.. I do comiserate with you...I do!!

The umps are generally nincompoops, but I reckon just about every team supporter would think that. - At any level.

I know what you are ( and have been ) saying, but there is no way we can blame our 'woes' (for the want of a short descriptive word) on the umpiring!

Even if there was a game where perfect umpiring was exhibited, we'd still be stuffing up kicks, still fumbling, still putting ourselves under ridiculous pressure, still have an ancient, complex gameplan, and still be missing unmissable goals.

You know that, ....we know that.

I do, however agree, that there should be an "umpiring clanger" stat.

Not to embarrass or ridicule them, but to promote 'competition and pride' between them, and maybe hold them to account a bit. I reckon its out there, and I reckon they should use it. It'd be a lot better if they came out saying "we made some mistakes duriing that match" rather than trying to defend some of the clangers all the time.

Gotta be thick skinned as an ump, and if they can't handle a bit of critisicm and accountability, well ... they can do other things with their Saturday arvo....

My "favourite" umpiring moment on Sunday was when we kicked out after a point at the Subi end and went long to Tabs and Crozier on the railway flank. Some Richmond player tried to wrestle Tabs out the way, and I can't remember if Tabs brushed him off and marked, or if Crozier flew over the top and marked. If it wasn't a mark, it should have been a free to Tabs. But the ump gave the Richmond numpty a free. Probably felt embarrassed for him. I was so angry, because it seemed to me that the ump had been looking elsewhere and only turned to look at the marking contest at the last instant, and just saw the Richmond dude falling over and figured that we must have done something wrong. Isn't the fundamental rule of umpiring, "If you didn't see it, don't call it"?

No, I reckon Subicao end, southern side. Brad Hill (I think) chasing the ball to the boundary, taken down by his pursuer with two hands firmly in Hill's back. Ball comes off Hill's hands OOB and it was called deliberate!

RR,

the Richmond player was Rance, who got talked up for manhandling Tabs off the ball repeatedly, including holding him out of marking contests. That 'holding' rule was responsible for a number of Richmond free kicks in front of goals but was allowed to happen all day by the umpires.

If you're waiting for Pleamantle to do something, you'll be a ghost before anything happens. Why do you think the AFL continues to do it? Because they know they can.

The one that got me was the so called dangerous tackle from Ryan , looked perfect to me( head might have touched the grass with the force of a goodnight kiss on a first date), Resulted in the first goal for the rookie player

They are kidding aren't they, doesn't matter how much noise Freo crowds make, it doesn't influence the umpires anywhere near as much as the silence from the opposition crowds at Subi.
