Just watching a replay of last nights game Crows v Swans. Good hard tough pre finals footy between two finals bound teams. Reminiscing on when we used to watch the Dockers play high intensity important games like this. Remember that Danger v Fyfe game. People talk about that game like it was a modern classic and that was our team. I definitely enjoyed it more than what I watched this year. How many seasons before we have a serious team again?

Hate to reply to myself and not on topic. But the conundrum of the season for me has been the form of our midfield. We would all say our midfield is our strong suit and the weaknesses are forward and back. But we have been getting smashed in the middle. The most stark thrashing was against Gws. If you look at the stat's we were smashed in clearances in the 4th quarter. Thats why we lost that game.

Why is our perceived strength performing so poorly this year?

Easy answer - we don't have Sandi..

Easy reply: GWS dont have Sandi either.

Suggest new thread entitled midfield shellackings.

maybe you could tell us who was present at the clearances.

Its really simple if you think about it. We are training up blokes and sorting the wheat from the chaff. Things take time. Be patient even if A Pearce comes back next year it will be another couple before he is a world beater - if he is capable. The same goes for most of the rest of the crew. Since the start of last year we are now playing more new players than old. Thats kinda massive any way you cut it. On balance its positive. The problem for the longer term is that they should come together as an age group more or less. Sustaining that over the longer term will be the hard part - keeping the best and renewing talent. But human nature means you tend to keep blokes beyond their peak out of respect, loyalty or desperation. And then your talent ages and only a massive rebuild can fix it.

Had we traded out Pav and 211 5-6 years ago for a bunch of high draft picks and/or young talent things may look different today - they are the sort of choices a club can make.

Montrachet, I put it to you that a large part of our midfield dominance in recent years can be attributed to 211 giving us the ball on a platter, and that not having him there has severely affected our clearance numbers due to our (over) reliance on his tapwork..

Yes of course the obvious answer is Sandi. But plenty of other teams have played well against us roving Sandi when he was dominant. But shoe on the other foot and our highly talented midfield can't rove to a more even contest?

I think in 2013 Sandi only came back for the finals BTW so similar personnel but not playing as well. We won a lot of games that year without Sandi

A few seasons ago, when the ball was in dispute, I'd back us to win it more than 50% of the time. This has not been the case this season or last. Only Fyfe seems desperate to actually get the footy.
