I've often heard the phrase about a team 'hitting their peak' at the right time of the year or they 'peaked too early'........'we are playing like crap now but come finals time we will be reaching our peak......'

Is this even a thing and if so is there a reason for it?

Sydney lost the first 6 games of the year after making the grand final last year and have gotten better and better since. In 2015 we were unstoppable for the first half of the season and then rapidly lost form looking totally burned out in the finals. The Bulldogs hit a good patch of form during last years finals which snared them a flag.

it just doesn't make sense to me that people talk about it as if clubs plan for it to happen leading up to finals..........but do clubs tailor the training load to ensure better performance at the pointy end of the season?

The answer is 'we have injuries/a lot of players playing sore'. A side 'peaking' at the right time is one who has managed to make it to the end of the season with few injuries and plenty of rest.
