TOPIC: Naughton

I had a look at the draft prediction thing on afl.com.au. It seems to me that not only does this kid look like a great fit for our current needs, but given he is predicted to be low first round in the draft, it may give us some trading opportunities. Of course, some homework would need to be done on how low he might genuinely slip in the draft, but conceivably we could trade our (probably) no.5 pick for maybe 10 or below and a second rounder, which we don't have and which would be useful, including in any chase for Matera or McGovern (or Buddy or Dangerfield).

I can't see anyone above Naughton in the predicted draft order who we would want more.

Thoughts?

Last year we wondered how we were going to land hill hamling kersten and mccarthy with the number of trades we had, free agency departure of mayne helped with Hill and the trading of pick 3 down plus a few extras helped land McCarthy and basically the others, whilst still keeping enough picks.

So this year if we are going to try and land McGovern, Matera and Wilson that the media and talking about, we are going to need some picks to trade, which might see our pick 5-6 swapping down to something later.

Players like Naughton it depends on the needs of the clubs as to if they need a key back, they will rate that higher than the plethora of mids available, so he could go much higher than where Twoomey rates him. According to his guide though he has Jarrod Brander rated as the 5th best player and best key tall forward/back which fits around our first pick range, he was a GWS academy player but is now eligible to be drafted by anyone. Problem is though if thats who you want to draft, you need to find something else to satisfy Adelaide should McGovern want to come back to WA and play for Freo, unless you want them to risk it in the PSD.

If we draft Naughton, can we get someone to call out his name Jackie Gleason style?

He is perfect for our recruiters to pass up on. Tall, athletic, accurate kicking forward who is a local.

Morgan will be able to say four other clubs passed up on him, the draft is a lottery and that 6ft 2in 72 kilo midfielder from Sandringham we are going to take is a serviceable footballer.

There's another gooden from West Perth I look forward to us completely ignoring too.

Ideally we need him to pack the kit away for the year.
A strong last few games at Peel and a good finals series playing against men will see him rocket inside the top 10.
That would effect our chances of a pick downgrade and getting him with say pick 12..
He is also going to the draft camp so good results could see a similar buzz that happened with Logue.
Cmon Freo - do your due diligence and then put him away for the year!

He just needs to behave erratically at the quarter time huddle this weekend.

Nah, just go to a night club and snot some bloke.
That should be enough to let him slip in the draft for us to pick him up (bit like Darling)

I really like Naughton and reckon he's a much more complete footballer than Logue last season. He has the footy brain to make it a long way with AFL level training and fitness and his marking is just fantastic to watch.

The problem is we already went down the draft order last season for a KPD as well as Hamling to join A Pearce down back. A first round draft pick on another one is pushing it too far for mine and i'd much rather pick up a KPF (Brander also looks good) than gamble on Naughton switching forward.

Pick 5 is a big stretch for Naughton and dropping down the order doesn't guarantee him either. I'd stick with pick 5 and hope for Brander personally but I would like to see Naughton in purple. Maybe in a couple of years returning home.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

Are the Vics really that good, or do reporters and recruiters not stray far from home? Here Vic Metro & Country have:
  • 8 of the top 10
  • 15 of the top 20
  • 18 of the top 25 - Vic Metro have 14 of these
WA have 2 of the top 25, three Allies and one from SA. It's as if the AFL was biased to Victoria (Metro) or something?

It's odd that Ian Hill didn't make the top 15, perhaps because he's at the bottom of the U18 age restrictions. He's clearly one of the best talents.

I like Naughton but I think a player like Darcy Fogarty could be a good option.. I can see us swapping our first round pick for Adelaide's for Mitch McGovern. So we could get Mitch McGovern and still stay in the first round

I've watched a few Peel games this year and I commented that Naughton was something special. I've heard comments like he's in the Alex Rance mould. You'd back A. Pearce to play next year despite his setback. But at Pick 5 perhaps, you'd go for the best available. I wouldn't be swapping that for any trade deal though.

So Hamling, Pearce and Naughton then? I don't recall us having any problems when it was Johnson, McPharlin and The Fist.
