TOPIC: Why are coaches always ex players?

The Prince Why are coaches always ex players? 6 years 8 months ago #1

The Prince
I've always been perplexed why AFL coaches are invariably ex AFL players. This excludes the vast majority of the football-expert population who would, statistically, produce better coaches.

As an analogy, think of the best commentators - in my mind Commetti and McAvaney - neither of whom had a significant pedigree as players of the game. Or great military leaders (e.g Monash, arguably the best on the Western Front) whose background is often academic and whose strength is meticulous planning and creativity (and not storming trenches).

Ross is a smart guy, but there are plenty smarter who never pulled on an AFL Guernsey...

Are you proposing we recruit Dennis and Bruce. Who are these people you speak of Prince, I think there is a big difference in having enough knowledge to speak on a subject being able to have others implement it is another. One of the biggest issues I have with turning over coaches is, I think there are a lot more aspects to the caper than purely footy know how some of these things take years to establish.
That's why even if I was a Collingwood supporter I would think long and hard before sacking Buckley. Do they really want to embark on a 2-3 year restructure under a new coach when there are signs that Buckley is finally turning the corner.

Yeah, naaah, Prince.

While I accept your premise that non-footballers could make great coaches (thats could not would) I'm not agreeing with either McAvaney or Commetti.

Ol' delicious would be foaming at the mouth to much to ever make a good coach and just based on his comments at times, he seems to struggle to show much comprehension of what is actually occurring on the field rather than talking up the AFL agenda of the week.

Now Dennis, well he used to be a coach...of West Perth. He coached them to some monumental losses. He also used to be a former WAFL footballer anyway but he was bit like Basil...short career, not very good

Good luck trying to fire up the troops if you "haven't been there and done it".

A fair bit of it is brains and smarts, but passion, experience and respect make up a fair bit of the job as well!. Brains is one thing, but reality and experience is often lacking from the academic types.....common fault with academic types all round, ....in my experience.!!

Yes, you'll counter that Bolton goes alright without AFL experience, and, yes he does! But I'll counter that with Wayne Brittain, and, no, he didn't go alright.

You need to have played the game to have a professional empathy but not at the highest level.

As Larkin pointed out its a people game as all leadership roles are. Clarkson succeeds cause he gets blokes to fully buy in to playing a certain way.

Many directors aren't ex-actors, but a lot are.

You have to be involved with the subject matter for a good length of time, so it is logical that ex-players are the obvious candidates. In most sports actually.

Neesham tried to innovate by using other non AFL coaches like Charlesworth but nothing much came of it.

Player talent has a lot to do with it. Robert Walls was a Drovers Dog who "coached" Carlton to a premiership and was subsequently able to make a long career of being mediocre with Brisbane, Richmond and then as a commentator.

Denis Pagan was a good coach by all accounts but after he left Carlton he became a real estate agent.

A good game plan is to be able to adjust to what is happening on the field during a game . To adapt , change , mix things up when things are going sideways or especially when thing are going bad . To adapt .
