Well you could as you say do the analysis yourself!
But seeing as we won the free kick differential in Rounds 11, 18, 19 and 20, lost by 1 free kick in rounds 15 and 16 and round 13 was a bye it would appear it's still a very good year and just maybe the umpires don't conspire against us but as in all games make some stupid decisions that affect all teams and supporters.

At what point did I mention compnspiracy, let's just say an anomaly that doesn't play out in our favour. An assumption could be drawn that this may add to the difficulty in winning games of football.
I assert that this anomaly can be verified over a majority of the years that our club has competed. I personally subscribe to unconscious bias as opposed to conspiracy.
If you don't have an issue with the other club that shares our home ground enjoying a massive home ground advantage that doesn't seem to equally transfer to our own club then I guess you and I differ.
My point in this thread was that the umpire did not seem to make any particular difference to this situation.

Maybe the slime change their game style away from Subi to one that doesn't earn them so many free kicks. I mean, it must be that, because if there was a systematic umpiring bias in their favour at Subi Oval, then the AFL would recognise it and do something about it.

RR I genuinely believe if we received the same advantage at Subiaco as West Coast we would win more games by bigger margins. I don't even begrudge their advantage would just like to experience it for a good two to three years to see how it felt.

Aah gotcha. Sorry about the misinterpretation. And I have never said or would never disagree with the fact that the slime always seem to win the free kick differential.

www.afl.com.au/stats can give you plenty of things to check out besides free kicks.

****we were up on frees in 2010, 2011, 2012, down in the others to 2016 although one was minimal.

Be interesting to check other teams. Would imagine Hawthorn and Slime would not be down too much.

Okay forget all my ramblings. I've proved I don't know what I'm talking about.

Checking that site we are -12 for the season.

Interestingly though Brisbane, NM and Carlton are all in the positive for free kicks. Adelaide, Sydney, GWS, Port and Richmond(-65) are all in the negative.

RR, you lost me at the AFL recognising something and doing something about it.

They save that sort of thing for rules that don't need messing with.

Damn you CA have now spent an hour on AFL tables and have found these facts.
We have had a positive differential on 9 occasions at an average of 1.02. We have had a negative differential on 14 occasions at an average of 1.58.
Our best year in terms of differential was in 2001 when we finished 16th on the ladder at 3.3+ , we enjoyed our best sustained run of positive differentials between 1999 and 2003 during this period we finished 15, 12, 16, 13 and then 5th, Our differential went into negative territory for the following 4 years.
Our worst sustained run of differential was between 2013 & 2017 during this period we finished 3, 4, 1, 16 & 17.
In fact of our top 5 differentials in the negative two were in our first two years and the next three we finished 3rd 1st and 4th.
2003/10 &12 were years when we finished 5th, 3rd and 6th respectively with a positive differential of .86.
I have tried to represent the figures as clearly and balanced as possible.
There is good evidence to suggest that there is some form of bias at play. This is before comparing the figures that other teams enjoy specifically WCE given that they are the team that we would most closely resemble. I might add when I did this exercise a few years ago much more thoroughly than i have today the results re surprising and from memory Hawthorn were not one of the favourites.

That subconscious bias comes in to play, in a momentum changing way, on occasions like the Kersten shepherd when Fyfe marked on Saturday, the Mundy holding the ball over the boundary line last week (after he had been blatantly scragged in a marking contest, the free against Walters for pushing out in a marking contest earlier in the year, the differing interprations of holding the ball against Neale and the GC player just before half time in the GC game on Saturday. That's 4 examples without even trying to think about it, and they were all at vital stages of games, and not all in games we lost.

I reckon one of the problems is that although they are supposed to interpret the rules in a similar manner, when you have four umpires controlling the game they all see some things slightly differently. I think that's actually quite normal but of course can be infuriating.

How often do you now see a controlling umpire at the scene of the contest see nothing and call play on, only to be overruled by a non controlling umpire 10-20 metres away.

Same as if you asked four neutral supporters their opinion of particular decisions I would doubt they would all agree 100% of the time.

Gee's those red flags, you'd be nervous waving them around when Hoddor was close by.

The AFL told me the 'magenta' flags were a promo for Donatelife Week.
