I think the opposite. He's a very good footballer playing above his weight rating. He tries to use his body to no effect. He needs to be on the 2002 Pavlich diet instead.

Yeah true DBTS but at least he does go forward or look for targets up the ground if the option is there. Dawson would only ever do that if there was nobody nearby to give it to, even if they weren't expecting it. Attacking was not in his repertoire.
Switching the play by going back or across ground is done by every team, not just Johnson and Fremantle.

Happy for us to switch the ball across the ground, but it'd be great if we could do it faster. When we're off, each player appears to stop, do the maths on where the ball should go next, count that out as too risky, remember to update calculations, then either kick it sideways to a stationary player now under pressure, or give up and bang it up the line to a pack.

The crowd now delights in seeing 3-4-5-SIX! consecutive possessions at speed that move the ball forward.

When we accept risk and move the ball quickly to running players, it looks good. It doesn't always work, bit practice is surely a good thing. This is time to practice.

'Just kick it down the line' usually means into congestion and contests.

Switching play creates space if someone has run hard enough to create the option. Where Freo let themselves down is poor execution. Skills. Nothing wrong with the tactic in itself.

Although you had to laugh when Bereton got near the end of his heavily ponderous circuitous explanation of why a circuitous switch was a bad idea, Pav cuts in with “Except when they get a diagonal kick into the centre…” (Mundy then did just that) “…and it opens up the whole ground.” Freo then slice through and Griffin kicks his goal seconds later.
