TOPIC: Future

The thing is, when you've gone hell for leather with a solitary focus on the immediate contest as a youngster, it's a prodigious talent that's then able to switch to consistent considered attacking play.

What we saw initially from Logue on his return to the side was a player second guessing himself and uncertain. It seems, whatever thought process he has now, has allowed him a lot more confidence and effectiveness in more contests.

Realistically, we won't know what guys like GL can do for a couple of years. We may get enticing glimpses, plus relapses. Think the Griffin Logue Project.

I'm not going to pretend RotV that I don't disagree with RL tactics but I don't think they have played a part in making Logue a more assured player. The split second decision making to go for a contest and leave his direct opponent is not a team plan and is definitely instinctual. I give Logue credit for that and even if it didn't always come off I thought it was a good decision.

I think we all know it wasn't RL's plan for our defenders to run off their forward and try and attack. However when they have the footy in a set play from a mark or set position, they are within the coaches instructions. That Logue was constantly following RL's instructions in that position and immediately looking backwards and sideways worries me. That's not a good way to exit our backline and has resulted in a lot of turnovers and failed transitions. I'd prefer something more akin to Ryan's movement of the footy.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

There were so many double negatives in your first sentence Biz it seemed like the literary version of Logue's first games.

Almost every backman in the league looks backwards when they win possession now. Pinning that on Lyon is misplaced. You know who was really good at 'instinctively' leaving his man to affect a contest up the ground? Zac Dawson. Who gets the credit for that?

Back to the topic at hand, Logue was a deadset liability in his first few games, but has settled in nicely to be a typical rookie who does some good things and some bad things every game. In time the good will outweigh the bad.

You're kidding, aren't you? Are you seriously putting forward the argument that a coach in today's game wouldn't look for rebound off half back and shoot themselves in the foot over and over again with a one-dimensional lockdown backline? C'mon, try harder.

I love the way he doesn't seem too worried. And his closing speed is awesome. If the opposition kick it a bit too loopy to their forwards, they better watch out if Logue is coming at them.
But he does get lost chasing the ball a bit. I'm sure Roly (and Johnno) will be getting it into his head when to stay and when to go.

I make no bones about it I like Logue. Exceeded any expectation I had for him this year.

I didn't think my english and grammar had deteriorated that far after a few drinks Morgan but I apologise if I wasn't concise enough. The point was I thought Logue performed a number of tasks that are very difficult to teach (especially in a players first 6 months or so) and tend to be split second decisions quite well and when given the opportunity to think through a situation, complied with what most would associate with team direction and coaching decisions.

I don't agree with your statement Morgan 'almost every backman in the league looks backwards' and I don't think you would agree with it either if it weren't preceded by 'before looking forward for options and trying to move the ball into a better position.

It's my belief based on years of watching the decision making of our defenders that RL instructs them to move the footy backwards and across the field first in all situations and that hasn't changed under a supposed rebuild.

I do agree Logue has been up and down though and will turn into a decent defender for us.

Some point in first half, we were going at 81% by foot and therefore smashing Suns in uncontested footy. No expert but I thought this was an indicator of good execution by our players on the park. With good execution by personnel results followed, or maybe Lyon just told them go out and play your natural game tonight.

I actually saw a gameplan tonight that was better executed compared to games a few weeks ago. In fact, losing the contested possessions by -35 had me baffled as to our score line. 31 scoring shots to 20 or so is a vast improvement on recent weeks. The telling factor was our connection from the mids. It's good that we've discovered our avenues to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Nah, I saw a well undermanned team turn the ball over constantly and allow us to play whatever way we liked.

You don't need a game plan when the opposition just give you the footy.

I saw a combination of both.

And I have also seen one of the greatest backward/sideways looking non attacking backmen ever. Aah how quickly you forget The Fist.

I don't often agree with the idiots on the box, but last night's comment that the problem with our backline is that players, when switching, go backwards instead of sideways. We looked best last night when we switched the play by going sideways or forwards across the ground, and on reflection, that has been the case all season as it allows the speedster like Hill to receive at pace from the player taking the mark and run through the lines to catch the opposition defence out.

CA I am confused are you talking about Johnson, he has always shown that ability to take the ball 40m backwards.
I say kick it long.
