I think Ryan has well and truly surpassed Spurr's position in the backline over his past few games at AFL level. Spurr's strengths were his incredible courage and toughness as well as his ability in the air but Ryan is a little taller and better in the air (and at reading the play) with a fair bit more attacking flair combining with very good disposal and more speed.

He looks a fantastic prospect back there and in combination with Hughes we have the aerial side covered as well as the speed and rebound out of defence. We could still use a small defender with blistering speed but as long as Weller is back there I think we have the early stages of a very strong defensive 6 . Throw in A Pearce to aid Hamling and things are looking good down back.

But wasn't Ryan just taking the intercept marking role that Ibbo could do quite comfortably? Don't get me wrong, I like the way he plays, but I think he had a role that typically makes a competent player look like a world beater.

RR, even with the rules the way they are, it takes guts to go back into the contest, especially after copping one early, and it takes footy brains to get in the right position to take those "comfortable " marks. Our backline has not looked the same since Ibbo lost form in that part of his game.
