Not really sure how to assess how the team has gone this year.......

Wins away against Richmond and Melbourne and really good performances against Geelong and GWS that we were in a position to win.

Yet a flogging against Brisbane away and out pointed by Collingwood, Hawthorn and West Coast at home.

Does this point to the evenness of the competition this year or just inconsistency by a young side?

We've shown we can match it against a few of the teams higher on the ladder but maybe they aren't as that good comparitively speaking to top sides of previous seasons?

I would have taken 10 wins at the start of the year and we might achieve this which is not a bad effort given list turnover and number of debutants.

Most predictions that I saw us as bottom four. Which would probably mean that the majority of judges possibly had us on up to 5 or 6 wins, based on that slightly ahead. In pre-season predictions on this site I had us in bottom half of eight, I would have to say this was a very hopeful prediction as opposed to confident.
I have seen signs this year that we are effectively changing the guard to align under our Brownlow captain. Our recruiting last year of 23/24 year olds, seems to have worked in providing some competent support in this. Hamling looks the goods Hill has been better than I thought, jury still out on McCarthy and Kersten, I am willing to be patient here. I reckon we have got more from some of the young guys on the list than I was expecting.
Lots of work to do nothing guaranteed will need everything to go right and find some more silk. Bennell will be part of this but more is needed.
I would argue that a team needs to be better for longer, to win one from this side of the country. Hard to say how much but let's say 5%, in a competition as strongly competitive and professional as the AFL this is substantial.
In summary ontrack but no guarantees.

Big improvement on last year. 3 or 4 horrible performances (Adelaide, Port, Brisbane) but mostly, regardless of final result, competitive, while having a massive turnover of the starting 22 with a reduction of average age. I think we're tracking nicely right now. Probably see quite a few departures at seasons end and jostling for draft picks, trades and psd pick ups. If we do as well as last season in that we'll be looking pretty strong.

With the quality of players in the side and the recruiting of middle aged players in the off season, I expected us to challenge for finals. That looked possible when the kids came out in place of some of RL's favourites after Rd 2 and played with abandon and attacking flair. It was fun to watch and had me reconsidering RL's position as someone who was inflexible and unwilling to learn and adapt.

Then he went back in his shell and started messing with players, issuing them instructions to flood back and occupy space at the cost of our ability to go forward and score. We looked horrible and ruined any chance at finals we may have had.

Now that chance is gone it appears he has given the side open slather to show him what they can do by letting them run 1v1 against GWS. All of a sudden we competed well and scored freely. It's clearly a far different set up to the one RL chooses to play normally and that it was so effective is quite an indictment on his credentials as a coach and tactician.

I'll be very interested to see if he goes back to his old outdated tactics or decides to finally move on from his failed plans and develop new ones that can compete with the fast paced and highly skilled football employed by the better sides.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I agree Bizkit. Maybe Roly is trying to achieve something that is not obvious to mere mortals, but I find the sort of game we played against GWS much more satisfying to watch. And I reckon the players enjoy it more too. Now I know that winning and enjoying are not the same thing, but maybe the can be...

The real litmus test for our season is how maggoted Cox and his pub mate Ryan get after a game. If they don't chunder in some alley we're doing pretty good. If they miss a week to detox their livers, we're not going so well.
