I've dislocated my shoulder twice playing footy and twice playing basketball.

When it first happens it is like a sublax where it pops out and then straight back in.

Then over time as the ligaments stretched it got worse and worse until I couldn't get out of bed without popping it.

The last straw was after basketball training when it wouldn't pop back in and it was into the ambulance with the pethadine tube and a 2 hour wait to get it put back in. That was quite excruciating.

I've had two operations with the latest one fixing it pretty well, a dissolvable screw which calcifies and holds everything together again. But all the strength in the arm has gone.

If that was Blakely's first time, fair enough, but if not then playing him and Grey is quite stupid if they are going to be liabilities in a game with no substitutes anymore.

Whether a player is ok to play is not the coach's choice for several good reasons, notably that the coach is not medically trained and won't have assessed the injury.

These a degree of uncertainty in these things. Sometimes the guy goes back out and it works sometimes it doesn't. Obviously they would like to make the correct call every time but they only experts, not prescient. How hard is that to understand?

Heres the thing about going back out with a dislocated shoulder - the associated risk of dislocating it again is not the point.

The point is you cant defend yourself. You cant break the fall when getting tackled. You dare not put your arm down to break the fall.

The doctor makes a discreet assessment on the joint. Who makes an assessment on whether he can play the game safely?

A doctor operating within a specific occupational setting would definitely (have the detailed capacity to) assess whether the person with the injury has the capacity to operate safely in that particular work environment when weighing up sending the person back out there.

It'd be completely irresponsible and amateurish for the doctor make a decision on the injury free of the expected environment and its extremes.
