Actual structures in place, that even I could see. Great effort from everyone. Too many incidents of two of our boys going up for the mark and almost or actually spoiling each other. Bad communication, I'd say. It's happened all season, so maybe I'm just obsessing or it's a problem.

Has happened a lot. We probably took for granted how well our settled backline functioned and communicated the last five years.

Say what you will about Dawson, he was entirely predictable.

GWS toyed with Fremantle, pacing for most of the game then won it with a five-minute burst of effort.

Jezza, GWS being loaded with top end talent, although being true has nothing to do with us, being supposedly terribly unlucky to lose.
On that basis GWS should win every game and a lower side could never beat a side above them. As you always like to point out it's the experience of other teams and now the talent of other teams that always kills us.

According to some our team is chocked full of talent and it is only poor coaching that we lose. Only watched the second half seemed promising to me. We need more pace and skill inserted into the team somehow, coaches seem to be developing lower end picks into decent players.
We look a lot better when we can maintain possesion for a number of possessions to allow quick ball movement also gives the impression there is a structure in place as players are not turned around again.

Countless turnovers at half-forward in Q1 and 2 cost us big time. And they were 'lowering the eyes' turnovers, not long bombs, which was disappointing.

What has lost just about every game in the last nine games when Freo has been in the hunt is a last quarter fade out. Even the NM game was lucky to win when Goldstein missed.

We were winning clearences against GWS until the last quarter and then were completely blitzed. Same against St Kilda, Geelong, Collingwood, etc.

I have zero confidence of any three quarter time lead unless it is over 40 points and let's face it, that's not going to happen this year.

RL actually played a more man on man style against GWS opposed to his normal flood the defense and try and counter attack strategy. It was very similar to after Rd 2 when the kids came in and he took the handbrake off, allowing players to run free and beat their opponent rather than occupy space and hope something magical happens on the transition.

It resulted in the side having players ahead of the footy to kick to and lead so we weren't always stuck in our defensive half with no ability or plan to move the ball forward opposed to bombing it long.

I don't know how long RL will allow us to play that way before he cracks down and goes back to his old tendencies but I enjoyed the first 3 qtrs and getting to see the kids show what they are capable of.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.

I could of sworn in at least two of the games I watched, I think it was against Hawthorn and maybe Geelong the commentators made reference to the opposition setting up with spares behind the ball while we were setting up with either a spare forward or at the contest.

DTBS,

Hawthorn did for a lot of their game with us. Not so sure about geebung. I don't recall us having extras forward against the Hawks.

The difference being the Hawks had guys outside they they looked for and used and took the ball forward very quickly. Over and over again. We, on the other hand, do not play an uncongested game so we don't have those outside options like Hawthorn does. Its one of the changes I want to see made so that we play a less congested focus and look outside for speedy elite kickers to get to forward to a lead.

It allows the Hawks to play extras behind the ball on occasion while still having forward firepower.

Id also add that its an unusual tactic for the Hawks and I dare say it was brought on to counter our congested playing style. It allows them to get the ball in the mob and then get it outside for a fast break. Considering the result, I'd say it worked fairly well for them

most sides against us this year have loaded up their defence - its the first thing I look at during a game - we tend to set up an extra on a wing. Things seem to change quickly once the ball is in play but most still play an extra behind the ball.

If a team is setting up with extra numbers in our forward line, this could explain some of our difficulty in finding loose targets to "hit up". So in essence this would at least point to the opposition having some part to play in our woes.
It is interesting what you say Larkin, as I can't get to games due to distance and kids footy, I rely on footy coverage. Based on conversation on this sight, most seem to think that our go to strategy is to have extra numbers in defence.
