It's funny that everyone thought Suma was a plonker of a coach at West Coast, and that he was a plonker at Freo, then he left Freo and now people dislike Lyon enough to consider his leaving a loss.

Kirk returned to his home city for a better job after getting what he needed out of Freo. As far as I can tell his biggest contribution was teaching Fyfe how to meditate, which if anything probably accelerated turning him into a flog.

I'm not sure how good our assistant coaches are, but I think to be a good assistant coach you need more than name recognition. Clarkson is considered the best coach going around, and his assistants are Cameron Bruce, Brett Ratten, Adem Yze, Damien Monkhorst and Max Bailey. Not many of those guys strike me as the sharpest tools in the shed.

Jezza - seriously?

"There is no coach on this land that could've done much last year and improved our current predicament given the age and experience of our list."

Isn't that the list that were minor premiers the season before?

You make some good points, but that's an absurd statement. A better statement would be "There is no coach on this land that could've suffered the catastrophe that that team underwent last year and kept their job - except Lyon".

I think what Morgan is trying to highlight is that there are people who hold some coaches to different a standard than they would other coaches in a similar position.

Morgan,

While I don't disagree with what you are saying, mainly because I'm not sure what you're saying but still....

In my view a good coach will get the best from his not just his players but his ass coaches as well. I'm not sure you can currently make that claim about Roly. Looking at the Hawthorn ass coaches, I'd say theres perhaps not a lot to be had there but Clarkson is getting something at least so full credit to him.

Another point to consider is that the successful coaches were generally all ass coaches at some point. The next big thing in coaching is probably a no-name ass coach at a club somewhere, so I wouldn't just write them all off.

As for Sumich, I was one who wasn't impressed. When he was our forward coach, we didn't have an effective forward line. Whether that was because of his lack or a lack in the seb=nior coach, I don't know. I dare say nobody else he does know as well.

He did ok at sowfs but not brilliantly and he did really well with the under 18s but I still don't see him as a senior coach in the AFL but I will say the forward line is worse now than what it was when he was there. Whether thats worth anything as to his value as a coach, is up to each to decide.

From what I've heard about Sumich, from people who have been involved with him, he is a smart footy brain, and talks well one on one. I reckon we could do a lot worse than get him back as the forward coach, maybe second in charge. Give him some authority over how the forward line should function. He would have a fair idea, being a pretty successful forward himself. Am I right in my thinking that he was the defensive coach in his last stint at Freo?

Brett Rattan doesn't rate Morgan? Not as good as Prior, Guerra, Rock or Hale?

What about all the coaches now at other clubs who have worked under Clarkson? Have any of Lyon's assistants gone on to bigger and better things?

As I was trying to point out, our coaching panel have bar one, had no coaching at another club.

Jezza, judging by your comments as a matter of interest I naturally assume you had Freo finishing below Essendon preseason.

The whole Clarkson "football academy" thing is way overrated. It seems a bit of a "well duhhh" that multiple premierships would bring multiple job opportunities for ass coaches. Said ass's don't seem to have anymore remarkable strike rate than coaches from other sources. Classic case of the halo effect.

Maaate, Gold Coast chose a coach who hadn't had an original idea since he told the swans to just kick it to Plugger. Brisbane got rid of one of the better football brains of the modern era through some boardroom kerfuffles and I struggle to even name their current coach in under 15 seconds.

All this aside, I can't see how anyone can say players, and not completely carp players at that, displaying no semblance of a game plan means there is a rock solid one.
