Its a simple game if you put some one in the bloody forward line before you get someone else to kick it in there!

Its a simple game if you have a forward line. !

We play like we are trying to avoid the off side trap...but there isn't one in footy

We do win in the midfield. More often than not we win the clearances and inside 50 count but can't score. uncontested possessions are different story though.
Are you suggesting Josh Kennedy would be of no use to us then?
Just because the Slime are heading for hard times doesn't make our predicament any better.

Kennedy wins the Slime 3 - 4 games a season and but for Yeo hitting the post in the last the Collingwood game would have been one of them. He's 6'6" and weighs in at 100kg and went pick 4 or 5 in his draft. Oh, and West Coast gave up Chris Judd in his prime to get him. He's largely the reason for their more recent 'sustained success' and the bloke they traded to get him is another one.

The complaints about the structure of our forward line appear to miss that in every other game all forward lines push back to the defensive half and only move forward when they have the ball. The difference??? We don't have Kennedy or Patton or Walker or Franklin as the leading/longer option. We have two blokes who are smaller than some midfielders and who've played about 50 games between them.

For sure we don't have anyone of the class of Kennedy. The only guy we have that is anything like him is Tabener but Roly has refused to acknowledge his form of late.
Besides as others have pointed out, if he does come into the side he'll be forced to run the length of the field for the whole game like the rest of the team and not be used as a stay at home forward like Kennedy, Hawkins, Patton, Walker all do their clubs.
It's the Rolyball way. Same as it's been since he got here.

Those players are not stay at home forwards. There is no such thing. Kennedy, for example, lurks in and around the centreline when West Coast don't have the footy. It's the way the modern game is played (sadly).

Yeah... I don't pretend to understand the intricacies of coaching but you can see trends and patterns.

Sorry if I end up repeating myself across threads but Freo don't structure up in any easily recognised way. When there are players forward they don't run and create space or leads like other teams. The ball comes in on a wing and a prayer more than delivered with purpose. The midfield can win possession and move it forward but they labour to do it a lot with unnecessary ball movement between players leading to turnovers often and a lot of passing is so clearly telegraphed it's easily intercepted. 3 defenders go up and spoil each other and there's no-one on the deck to tidy up...

it looks like chaos. I can handle some chaos, the modern game often delivers that but I like to see some form revealed within that.

Talking about youth is one thing but when you think that a couple of years ago it was down to poor quality players or older players you could be forgiven for thinking that maybe it won't be until we have a team of perfect players that we see the grand plan finally revealed.

Well played Flag and well put. The idea of stay at home forward is absurd. No coach in their right mind would allow that to happen. Putting TABs in the same basket as Kennedy is like saying Yeo would win a Brownlow. Tabener is working his backside off to improve his game. He's coming from a long way back. There's 5 games left in the season. We've got a midfield that's off slightly with a 19 year old trying to fill Sandi's shoes and doing nicely. Our young team are battle weary with our leaders feeling the weight of an inexperienced side. We might not win another game but geez we've uncovered some gems and found out that a few older boys might have played their last game in the ensuing weeks.

Guy, that lack of leading to open up space is a big problem. It seems like our forwards make a lead and then just stop when the ball doesn't get kicked to them. Often they all lead to the same spot as well. Why don't a couple of them bite the bullet and run through the ideal spot, this often draws the loose man out of there as well.

Glass half full view: There's at least one more win in this team, before the season's over. That will earn 14th position, minimum. Twice as many wins, and a higher finish, is a definite improvement over last season.

Do we want to win another game? The closer we are to the bottom the more chance we have of finding a key forward in the draft. I think you'll see a fair bit of experimentation from the bottom 4 or 5 teams in the coming weeks.

If you weigh that up against the number of disenchanted supporters, lack of merchandise sales and members who don't keep their memberships going, is it worth it?

Well, it's all been said before, but we have beaten 3 current top eight teams this year, with our young team. Inconsistency is what every young player battles against in their formative years. When we have played and won we have played quicker and played on a lot more than when do when we lose. Too many handballs from players standing still. Mark it and go...space will open up somewhere, just keep the pressure on the opposition, don't give them time. But, we can do it and when we do, we look dangerous. Having said that I think we really need Taberner (or similar player) to complement Kersten and Macarthy. They are all mobile and I reckon we have looked our best in attack when all three have been there. They are all mobile, but they all need to be aggressive on the same day. That is all Taberner needs, a bit of mongrel. 6'5" and can run, mark and kick really well...he has it all but just needs to play a bit more angry. But a more attacking mindset has to be encouraged, coached...defence is a must but attack with energy and positivity!!!
