Yeah enough of the Mitch McGovern is our saviour talk. He's playing almost as a fourth tall forward for the Crows and roams around as he wants because he's opposed to an undersized fourth defender. He's also 2 inches shorter and 10 kilos lighter than his brother.

He isn't the forward you're looking for.

..... anyway, I'd hate to see Balic go, but if that's what he wants, then lets get him off our list. And to think with all the big lures the guys have to stay at Freo especially with the new stadium, if they want to go home to Vic, then let's pack their bags quick smart.

Just on the leading up to the ball point, forwards need certain attributes to make this work. They need good timing / instincts, enough acceleration to create separation, either enough speed to keep space or strength to hold it, and good hands.

I'm not sure we've got too many of those blokes in the forward line (or anywhere). Tabs can run, but he's unlikely to beat someone on the burst, or hold his ground. I reckon his best go is to run around a lot and hope someone kicks it to him. It's not a lot to hang your hat on, but it's better than we've got.

I've never seen Kersten create much space, and is too small to hold his ground. Seems to have decent instincts and a good set of hands though.

The only people on our list I'd back to be able to lead at the ball are McCarthy (good instincts, decent burst speed - but he's been horrible out of form) and Ballas, who doesn't quite have the burst speed anymore, but knows exactly when to deliver a sneaky whack to the defenders guts and run at the ball.

So I'm not sure a traditional (re: not used by anyone anymore) approach of exclusively leading at the ball would work with our personnel. It's also impossible unless you move the ball quickly from defence, which we only manage to pull off in patches.

But for what it's worth, I'm not sure why you'd play both Kersten and McCarthy. If Cammac is back, give Kersten a spell and let Tabs run around a bit.

What about a radical idea of leaving at least one forward in the forward line instead of them all flooding inside the opposition 50 and then having to race back in an effort to beat the ball carrier bringing it in.
This gives him an open area to lead into and no backman is going to stop them IF the ball is delivered properly.

How big was Tony Modra? He didn't have to be 2 metres tall to reach the ball. I thought he was a pretty decent target.

Morgan the theory is right, the execution of it requires some thinking and structure. I made a comment the other day about the way Meth Coast forwards move about so that the small forwards cause separation of Kennedy from his tag so he can burst 10m into space. This could be done by any off our mob, Tabs, Kerstan, McCarthy, Cox. It just means you have to have some structure and a box of plans on when and how you are going to do it.

I believe at other clubs they call this coaching and structure.

Those small forwards blocking for Kennedy just as he ball is coming so that he can mark in the clear is the froward libe equivalent of watching Johnny carefully edge his man away from the ball drop so that McPharlin can mark without giving away a free. It takes players working together for a long time to et that just right. Give he Freo forwards some time together and they'll get there.
As for Tabs - make him earn it in the WAFL. Sorry yeti, but I care too much about Tabs to just throw him on the ground because we "need a win". Do we? I'm not sure Tabs kicking a bag right now will see us to a Premiership this year so let's take the long view. I have no such concerns for the long term welfare of kersten. Happy to use Kersten as a stick:carrot for Tabs' development.
(On the down-low, I got the impression that Kersten and Can Mac were a bit of a package deal - looks to me like The Boss is just playing Kersten as a show of good faith to The People's Mo.)
Lobbe is great but would cost us far too much.
Mitch McGovern looks good because the team is going great - in the mid 2000s when Freo was going great, Murphy looked like a gun forward. Team momentum does amazing things for a guy's credibility.
"Let's ditch half the list" falls in the same basket of knee jerking as "let's sack the coach". Maybe let's turn over our list gradually and reasonably and, hey, it's a rebuild, so maybe out with the older, in with the younger, and if there's talent coming our way then make it 6 instead of 5. Somethings about babies and bathwater.
Wow, this thread has taken some big turns... didn't we solve that delisting question on the first page?

Get Tabs out there now to support Darcy. That way Darcy will last the year out.

JS, Modra got the footy because he wanted it more than anyone around him.And for a not so big key forward he was not afraid to put his body on the line any time that was needed. He kicked goals because he practised kicking goals. Maybe our forwards should give up on the drills and skills, forget about the tactical discussions and spend an hour and a half each training session kicking at goal. What a radical concept that would be, almost on a par with playing someone at full forward all day.

The club is not just trying to win the game this week. They are trying to build a set of options for a team that can go all the way in a few years. There's some overlap, of course, but there's a big picture.

What we don't know is what the players have been told to do. If they aren't meeting what's asked, they may find that they are out of favour and back at Peel even if they look ok to us on the ground. On the other side, if they are doing what's asked but it isn't working because of other factors like ball delivery they won't be held to to blame because of some random statistic.

There's also a management issue of rotating developing players through the team so they spend a bit of time growing into a position. Even if it isn't working too well they have to give things a serious test out to figure what needs to be changed.

Trying to second guess this stuff is nuts. Personally, I'm hoping for player development and a top 5 pick this year. I don't want to float around the middle of the ladder indefinitely and I realize this involves a bit of pain.

I favour playing Tabs now ala Yeti, partly to support Hodor especially since Cox has been ommitted.

Not too fussed though if Roly takes up Cletus` view and wants to develop him in the twos for a while longer to really get his confidence up. Neither here nor there really, both approaches have merit.

My fear is that there may be no approach whatsoever. What WILL bother me big time, is if Roly leaves him at Peel for the last 6 games or so ie the rest of the year and then delists him, without having another look.

The not play Tabs question all comes down to Roscos intentions.
If there`s no way Roly is going to delist him, then Im fully relaxed about playing Cammac and Kersten in front of the big fella, he will get his shot all in good time. If the decision is already made to cut him and as a result he doesnt play again, then I reckon that could be a decision we come to regret, given all the talented 2m tall KPPs we have on our list.

I`m just a little uneasy at the dismissal of Tabs performances in Rolys pressers. Hopefully hes just sending a message to Tabs that he better increase the aggression dial and do it quick. I remember his dismissing one of Lachie Neales first great games and also diminishing Connors performance after a good game in the early days. Maybe he secretly thinks Tabs is going OK but wants him not to get comfortable. Who knows?
