If a young player is uncontracted at years end, he is free to put himself in the preseason draft...and effectively, he can leave the club and the club receives nothing for him. He has to take the risk in the draft that he will end up somewhere not of his choosing, and that may mean not being picked up at all.

We can however, organise a trade for him during the trade period, even though he's not contracted 2018. In this case, we can try and get something for him, or offer him another contract at the end of the trade period. ?

That's right isn't it??

I've been wading through pages and p[ages of AwFL trade and draft rules, but have not been able to get a clear definition of what happens in the Balic - (presuming he wants to leave) circumstance, because it gets muddled by free agency rules and un-restricted vs restricted. etc etc yadda yadda.

As I understand it, (in Balic's case), if he is not contracted at years end, and he wants to go anywhere other than the Dockers, he can go via the preseason draft. And we get nothing for him.

And, a question for you lawyer types - I presume 'contracted to 2017' means December 31 2017 (ie does that mean he is contracted whilst the trade period .draft is on, even though he is not contracted 2018), OR, is contracted to 2017 means 2017 grand final day??

Larger issue is...there are 21 2017 contracted players on the Dockers list. I've looked a t a few other 'professional' clubs, they seem to be around the 10 -15 level. It could be argued we are a bit more exposed than normal.

Now, some of these will be de-listings, and some of these we'll have to keep, some might be retirements. But I know we cant just go out and get 21 players (or a number 10 - 15 less than that!), so...., now the Fyfe deal is done, I suspect there's going to be a few contracts signed pretty promptly.

WHO are "the keepers"??!! ...(and, if there is anyone out there who is "all over" the trade/draft/uncontracted v contracted player situation, I'd love a simple explanation!)

Basically, he's on the list until he's off the list. ie traded, delisted.

So, he stays on our list and can be traded. If uncontracted after trade period, then he can' be on our team list submitted to the AFL. Then he's free to enter the draft.

So we may get a little something in the trades or nothing in the draft

If he did want to leave , he would have to get traded to a vic club or risk Brisbane lions picking him up with their first pick, his parents would still be missing their boy.

He may as well play for Freo.

Steve Johnson and Sam Mitchell are probably the two best examples of this, geelong could have let johnson go to the pre season draft but he wanted to get to GWS so they accepted a pick they weren't going to use anyway to make sure he got there. Same goes for Mitchell. Jordan Lewis still had a contract, but with discussions with hawthorn agreed to shift to melbourne, again for practically nothing draft pick wise.

Like wise if Balic says he wants to go to Richmond, 8 Vic teams are currently below them, so they would probably look to trade to make sure it happens. If he requested the roos however, they could try to get a trade for him but the Roos offer would be far less knowing that in their current ladder position (17th) their liklihood to get him in the pre season draft is pretty high, so they could wait it out. It makes it a lot harder on balic however.

He's on our list during the trade period (October).

Drafts are in November, including pre-season draft. We can trade him and get something or delist him and get nothing. Then his only option is the draft

So.... there are 21 players currently contracted to 2017 that are all tradeable (or keepers ie recontracted) commodities. But (like Barlow Deboar and Mzungu) they can all be picked up for free in the preseason draft if we can't trade them or if we choose not to recontract them.

So, out of the 21, whos tradeable, who's a keeper, whos delisted. ??

As a suggestion.....

Recontract : Mundy, Nyhuis, Johnno (if he wants to) Strnadicia, Duman

Recontract, but potential trades : Taberner, Crozier,Tucker, Langdon, Grey, Crozier, Deluca, Suban, Balic

Try and trade/but potential delists, (although all could get 1yr contracts) : Ibbo, Ballantyne, Griffen, Collins, Clarke, Sheriden

Delist : Dawson

Point I make, is a fair few of them get to stay, if you can't get a trade, but at this stage, we have 5 draft picks, so 5 at least, have to go.

Who, other than Dawson, make up the 5??

Tabs will be the only one picked up by another club in the draft

Theres no way at this early stage that Kersten, Cammac, or Cox have proven beyond all reasonable doubt that they`re better than Tabs. So why would we trade away or delist potentially our best key position forward?
I think its too early to get rid of Tabs and it would be a big mistake.

For what its worth...I think Tabs is a keeper, but, I'm unconvinced he comes in this week. I'd still be asking him to put another big game in at WAFL level. ...I know you wont agree Yeti :)
He's played 50 AFL games...he's got to know that further AFL games from here, require him to exert maximum effort, complete committment, for every minute of the match, and, that he's coming in as a key forward, not just as a development 'project' player. He wants to stay at Freo, we shouldnt be throwing away those that want to stay...provided they have potential and upside.....and Tabs has heaps of that!

What about the 3 unknowns - Ubergang, Strndicia, Duman. What are their prospects and how have they been progressing?? Ubergang has been on the list for a while now.....is there hope there, or is he becoming in danger of being delisted..?
