Gee but that free kick to the Weagles for in the back when the guy took a dive and should have been pinged for holding the ball really hurt. Only 30 metres out and a goal would have made the difference about 2 goals.. They were looking very wobbly at that stage and rebounded for a goal. I've always said it's not always about the numbers but where and when frees are given or not given. This was a perfect example as were the 50 metre penalties and those not given to us.
All in all though I think our young guys are learning, albeit the hard way at times.

Was Umpire 9 (Stevic) being just a little bit 'technical' with the two 50m against Freo in Q4 - in each case the Eagles player had barely completed the mark before he pinged us for having another player (Mundy in the first and Darcy? in the second) running in the 'zone'?
He was also the one who gave precious little in F50 including the 'push' v 'holding the ball' mentioned in a post above.

We didn't win the soft 50 metre penalty count, or goals kicked from free kicks. At least 6 of our free kicks were from them kicking the ball out on the full so take them away and things are pretty even on that front.

We may have won the overall free kick count but I doubt whether we got too many of those free kicks forward of the centre square. How many frees did we get in our forward 50?
The umps know quite well that what matters is not just the number of frees paid but where they are given and above all those that are not paid or overlooked are just as important.

Even the Priddis-ey=ey 50 was technical - technically right and technically wrong. Priddis had stepped a metre off his mark to handpass to a receiver, but didn't. Lachie encroached knowing Best-in-show had played on, but the umpire hadn't called it, so a 50 was given. If it had been the other way around, the milliseconds given to Mundy and Darcy to clear a contest, we would have received a 'play-on' call. Technically right, and technically wrong. A more reasonable outcome could have been simply "go back and take your kick', or even a belated 'play-on' call.

Yes, there were at least a half-dozen out on full kicks given. I don't believe we had as many - two or three. Irrespective we did win the free kick count, 13 - 9 thereabouts. Hardly a Toilet endorsing 52 frees in seven days outcome delivered by the same three umpires H&A, but, nyah...

Yesterday was a fine example of holding and pulling players away from the ball in front of umps and no kick was giving. There was several were one arm was held before collecting the ball with the free hand and getting pulled away.

Yes mac. In the 4th quarter Brad Hill is going for the loose ball with one arm held. Not tiggy touchwood, but blatant. Some eagle picks up the ball and runs away with it and Brad just looks at the ump. He's probably thinking, "This sort of thing didn't happen at Hawthorn".

On the stroke of half-time, the bloke who sits in the row in front of me turned and said "it's like watching a game where the two teams have two different sets of rules to follow". I knew exactly what he meant, and I think it perfectly summarised the game, especially some of the out-there umpiring decisions.

The perfect example of why our blokes are under pressure kicking into the forward line came when Walters took a mark just inside the centre square in the last quarter (I think). He was backing back to take his kick, took about 5 or 6 steps and was called to play on. NO deviation off his line, NO attempt to play on, simply getting back to take his kick. It happens regularly to Freo players, very rarely to others, as evidenced by the Priddis 50 mt.
