Clubs ability to retain players has been pretty good. When people carry on about how our club has screwed up when we miss a player that slips in the draft and should have picked him, generally there was some reason or risk associated with that player. Same situation with Balic unfortunately with risk comes possibility of negative outcomes. Fortunately he is over the wrist injury so no reason other clubs won't be interested.

Hes a tradeable commodity right up to the point that we can't organise a trade. At that point, being uncontracted, hes free to put himself into the preseason draft where we lose him for nothing.

Now, theres inherent risk for him in going via the PSD, because he may not get to where he wants to go. But all the other clubs know that he' s not going interstate, and they all know they can get him for free.

So, I'm not sure they are going to be climbing over themselves to trade away players or picks for an unproven player with a fair bit of baggage.

I'm not sure many will be giving up players or 2nd rd picks for him....

If he does go for nothing but a sour taste, you're best seeing it as a case of swings and roundabouts.

There are 9 vic teams who may be interested that aren't north Melbourne, I thought he did enough for them to consider a late 2nd or early 3rd rounder for him, so expect this will end up being a neutral result in terms of pick anyway. Does feel like we have wasted 2 years in development though. On its own it doesn't kill us but combined with drafting decisions in the last 5 years does mean our rebuild is perhaps going to take longer than we thought.

I certainly don't feel like we have wasted 2 years of developing him.

I mean GWS might feel a little bit different given they took McCarthy with a top 15 pick..

When it comes to value, it's not as if we took him with a top 10 pick and then possibly get a 2nd or 3rd round in return. IT was pick 38, so anything around there is fine in my eyes.

As it is this season we have Cox and Darcy who were taken between picks 35-40, so no reason why you can't get some keepers with picks in that range.
