TOPIC: Going forward

For the first time in a long time, I thought it looked like we had some degree of forward structure yesterday, especially in 3 out of the 4 quarters. 4 of our goals game from short kicks honoring strong leads into space, 4 goals were over the back from quick ball movement and transition, 4 from contested marks (I classified the one from Sonson in the first quarter loosely as a contested mark, but realistically he just read the ball better), and one from general play (Nyhuis' third in the last quarter, which was an absolute beauty). When we reverted back to our idiotic long-kick-and-hope-for-the-best in the third quarter, we played directly into North's hand and brings their tall defenders into play with intercept marking. The Slime tall plays in a manner not too dissimilar to North's, so I'm hoping that we have turned the corner and go forward from here with the forward play that was evident for most of yesterday...

I was at the game behind the freo cheer squad, who did a great job as usual, and noticed that in the last qtr at every centre bounce our structure was to stand in a perfectly straight line from about 45m out to the edge of the centre square. Is this the way we always set up? It looked very peculiar as it essentially left the entire forward 50 vacant and created a line of 11 players who couldn't actually see what was happening (5 dockers and 6 Roos)

Agree Quiexo. One of the things I noticed was that we look a lot better transitioning the ball when Weller is back and has the ball in hand. On a couple of occasions he burst from half-back, took on a man, and then kicked it long. It’s amazing how much more space the forwards seem to have when you bypass a chain of possessions in the middle. You’d love to see more of that, but other than Weller (and possibly Crozier) we just don’t have anyone down there capable of doing that.

The other thing was that Fyfe won a lot of the ball in the middle, and did a good job spotting up players leading towards him. He’s not the most penetrating kick, so I reckon the forwards know to lead up to him, and he has the vision to put the ball in the right spot. Again, if you win the ball in the middle, you can get the ball in the forward line quickly.

I still think there’s a spot for Tabs in the forward line though. When we are forced to go slow (and I don’t think this is a choice most of the time) we need someone who can at least make a contest forward. Pav and Mayne used to be those guys, and Tabs is the best we have at the moment. I reckon he would have gone well in yesterday’s game.

For most of the game it looked to me like Freo were employing a strange and little used tactic of playing direct up the corridor.

Fancy that.

Good on him - Smiley's eyes are on the ball. I don't know how many games I've endured at Subi staring down the wide empty expanse of the corridor (from the city end) while rumble ball goes on (and on and on ad infinitum) along the flanks. Last year it was soul destroying - it just seemed so pointless and stupid - stoppage after stoppage after stoppage, it got so bad that the crowd were even applauding a fairly ingenious paddle out of bounds. Brad Hill has brought the concept to Freo of seeking space on a route not necessarily defined by a straight line. If, for no other reason, you've got to hand it to Steven Stephen's kid brother for having the leg speed to break the geometry of kicking the ball straight up the line.

It's made a big difference to the way we play - everyone, especially Mikey, has learnt from it.

He certainly had the first half of the season Polly but it seems of late Brad's been sent running backwards and across goals often instead of looking forward. On a number of occasions he ran the footy +20m backwards and then kicked further back for no apparent reason, on several of those turning it over. It also coincided with the period of the game after half time where we slowed down and had nothing forward (due to everyone being sent behind the footy) and started bombing the ball again.

It wasn't until the final 5min or so when we lost the lead that we threw some players forward again and stopped flooding the defensive half and side of the contest. I'd really love to see the players left free for a full game rather than establish a lead, flood back, let the other side back into the contest and risk losing the game again.
Nathan: When did you get balls?
Simon: I've always had balls you've just never seen them.
Nathan: That's the gayest thing I've ever heard.
