I didn't say anything about gamesmanship being ok. I made no judgement about that.

I'm saying that it's been around a long time, that our players do it just as others do and the rule about returning the ball is very clear. So is the penalty, actually...

the level of outrage over this is silly. Calm your jets, pull your heads, buy some merch.

I think more people hate Reiwoldt for the way he did it and the way he drew the umps attention as he stepped theatrically aside, to let the ball hit the ground. The smug look on his face probably cost a few TV screens as well. Dickhead el Primo.
That said, an umpire like Glenn James would have said "You are an idiot Reiwoldt, pick it up and give it to Membry and for F...'s sake grow up or go back to the under 10's"

Yes, RM. If the ump had done that, would we even be having a conversation about it? Who would actually stand up and be counted to argue that the ump was wrong to deny the 50m?

It would have been "nice try, you cheeky devil, but too cute by half". Over in a few seconds.

You can't penalise being a dickhead, but that doesn't mean it should be rewarded.

I had a conversation with an older couple on the train ride home after the game. Nothing to do with Reiwoldt, clearly the umpire watches the ball go back to towards Reiwoldt, arms open then stands back raising his arms and moves away.

Umpire completely sucked in.

Hope he doesn't get sent to our year 5 boys next weekend.

I think the fuss has been about the fact that Reiwoldt, as a former captain and club legend and one of the games superstars; and whether he likes it or not is regarded as a "role model". At much as we love them, if Ballas or Crowls, players that are always pushing the envelope and exploiting the angles, had done this we would have shaken our heads albeit with a secret rueful smile and labelled it ( as the press has) as a "cheeky" but legal incident and moved on. However, I would have been disappointed if a player of similar stature in our club ie Pav had done it.
