There is a very good point being made here. Once you've given away the kick and the 50m, you've got nothing to lose (except maybe $1000 for the melee). So you go in, and try and provoke a response. You can do anything and you will lose nothing. But if you manage to elicit a response that is seen by the umps, you can win big by getting the free overturned.
But to win big you need a stupid umpire, and Freo get assigned at least one of these every game.
What umpires need is the ability to "store" free kicks. So that we get the 50m penalty, kick the goal, and then if the opposition has infringed after the awarding of the 50m penalty, we get the next kick out of the middle.
