For all of you looking to the future, you're looking at it. As long as Lyon is coach, this is what you're going to get. It's the same football we've had since he came, he's had 5 seasons, it's not changed much, and regardless of personnel, it'll look exactly the same when most of the 2013 guys are gone.

The rebuild is bogus. It's a reshuffle, some new ins, and a tweak of his game style to allow for reduced rotations or anything else clubs needs to do to react to whatever restrictions the AFL apply each new season.

Dull, defensive, uncertain, turnover-riddled football, that bombs into either an empty or totally clogged forward line which relies on the skill and creativity of a bloke or two, like Ballas and Walters. Bodge it forwards anyway, anyhow, and try to create something from nothing. A better version of this sees you narrowly lose away from home against Geelong, when you coulda actually won the bloody thing. But it's still the same football, hoping to fall over the line on the right side.

Lyon plays football by numbers. He not interested in building a game around skill and smart, aggressive plays, takings risks and trusting players. It's ironic they've played some of their best footy when it's assumed he's let them do just that. If he hasn't and has been in full control in those games, why can't he and they dish up more of it? He has more experience than youth in the team.

No, his footy is about effort and conservative systems. In fairness, St Kilda play the same football, and a lot more teams currently are too. It's dull, colourless, invites mistakes and makes footy uninteresting and bland; a festival of forward line soap juggling to the Monster mash. The lucky bloke pops up with the pill and either has a crack or it gets cleared. Fantastic. Let's see that again. Won't have to wait long.

I'm not trying to convince anyone otherwise, those determined to be optimistic will latch onto young players doing well, and tell themselves everything will get better. I can't get fired up at a few young blokes having decent starts to their career, because the assumption is they will improve and eventually lift Fremantle to a power club – this is steve1's vision remember? That was the pup they sold us along with Lyon.

I bet it won't get better. I'm not going on what is expected to be a poor year, or a few close losses. If the Matthews' maxim of 50 games tells you everything you need to know about a player, how many seasons does a coach and his ass team get? I don't know what Leigh would say, but I reckon 5 years is plenty to see what you're going to get from Lyon (and Bond) – plus he's got form from his last club, which so far, he's pretty much replicated perfectly.

I'm not angry at the loss, but am I bored rigid and losing the will to want to watch them play. I'll change my view when I see real change. I don't see it with Lyon and Bond there. I'm also sad that some talented footballer's careers will be wasted while Lyon spins his wheels, and wheels out his spin.

There is some coaching concerns there for sure. The primary one for me is the number of blokes going to the ball either ground or in the air. There is no structure around the ball, Saints had a number on the release all day.

Defenders flying for spoiling contests when their opponents were not flying for the ball.

It all feeds into the mythology I hold about Lyon; its all about effort and discipline. We dont use the ball well because we are not set up well, the kicks are so much harder to make.

But I think Cox, Darcy, Weller, Pearce, Hamling, Neale and Grey are super young players and its a good start to have great young players on your list.

There's a lack of cohesion for sure. In the first quarter three Freo players all flew for the same mark. I was livid, until I realised they were Hamling, Spurr and Ryan (I think) and I remembered the three have probably played a handful of games together.

Then Fyfe and McCarthy hit heads going for he same ball.

The effort is there, but we're not playing as a unit. There's about 10 players out there who've barely played double figure games for Freo. That happens when you start turning over a list.

Not sure where it wa all get us, but when you don't have continuity in the team, you're going to get some clangers.

Could you envisage Ross Lyon in the video review session highlighting a player who didn't go to the contest and chose to stand off the pack waiting for the handball release?

Me neither.

I'm glad you and your mates aren't in charge Drubbing. The game plan is fine. A slight improvement in delivery and some decent umpiring and we would have won by 5 goals against a good side. But hey if you want to toss your frock go for it.

Not sure what game you were watching, mickomac but it wasn't any game that had Freo in it.

Where you have a game plan that constantly requires players to hang on to the ball so that other players can get forward to provide a target, the game plan is NOT FINE.

Its very simple.

Constantly kicking to the back 50 until we turn it over is not a plan, its an incipient disaster...that somehow keeps striking us.

The umps were poor but our game plan is poorer

Honestly the results are about what we all thought they would be after last year. An improvement but not finals. But wow we are uncovering some players to get excited about and that I did not see coming. Kudos to the Coaches etc...

I didn't see it that way. We lost by 3 points, in effect because of some poor decision making.

Darcy finished the game punch drunk. If Cox hadn't been hobbled, Sheridan on one leg and 211 out early we likley would have won.

Where the argument falls down is if we'd won which could have easily occurred, this negativity wouldn't have surfaced. How'd ya feel after we pinched the Tigers and Melbourne games?

Drubbing, well articulated spill. But you're wrong. Skill errors cost us not game plan or Roly's existence. Win Geelong and today, you wouldn't be writing your spill. McCarthy dropping a couple of easy marks and Cox running into an open goal and getting tackled is not Roly's doing. You are complicating things. What I saw today was nothing short of a miracle to be as closed to them losing Sandi early. If you thought that watching sides like Carlton, Brisbane, Melb, Dogs play attractive footy you're wrong. I'm sticking with Roly and the boys.

You're wrong. How do you think skill errors occur? Why do so many experienced player commit the worst of them? With a win today and against Geelong, I'd still feel the same, because unlike 90% of the people who post on here, I'm looking longer term than the next game, the next debutante and next year.

Lyon has another 4 years. Expect more of this for that long.

Why are our skill levels so poor? Year after year it's always the same and this is after we supposedly appointed ass coaches who would correct this.

I don't know where to find them but would love to see the scores against us that came from turnovers compared to other clubs. At one stage today near the end of the second quarter their complete score bar two points came from turnovers.

Since Lyon has been here we have mostly been a hard, competitive team. I see our boys cracking in, making some mistakes...but having a go. I like our team playing hard, uncompromising footy.. I would love our team to score more efficiently once we get it there, but alas, we are not at the moment. I like a defence-minded approach, at least it keeps us in the game. As stated, it is not the game plan that is preventing us winning, the game plan is actually keeping us in the game for a chance at winning. Pre-Lyon, were we ever respected by the league...really? We were seen as a pushover in the big games. Not during Lyon's term...ok we've had a low year last year but we have shown some real desire this year with a lot of young players buying in. We are heading in the right direction...I don't want to ever go back to Connolly/Drum game plans...EVER!!!!

The biggest problem we have, and the reason for turnover scoring, is the time we take to kick the ball when exiting the backline. How many times do you see Johnno, ball in hand, waving his arms like a traffic cop on point duty while we are yelling at him "kick it to Hill, Walters"

I don't know if they are coached to wait and look for, then take the safest, best option or take it on themselves to do so (Johnno is not the only one, just most obvious as he takes the kick in) but it is our single biggest skill error. The young players do it less, which makes me think coaching is the problem.

On Darcy, he has shown what he is made of already, last week later in the game, and this week early, he has taken hard knocks at the centre bounce which he may have thought should have been frees, but has shaken off the knock and continued to go hard at his game. He is a player we can rely on to perform at this level when the crunch comes. I think he is our most promising recruit since Pav walked in the door, and hope he gets the support he needs on field. What I would like to see is another ruckman step up so he could play at full forward and give us a real target.

And on that, how good was it to see Ballas again running hard from the forward line to provide options for our backs .
