What I hope for is to not walk away from the remaining home games this season bemoaning the poor quality of footy, and be left feeling dudded by the lousy umpiring, the cess-pool AFL, or the Dockers footy club (in no particular order).

I leave baseless opinion to you Jezza, you come up with them all the time, it's practically cheer squad mentality.

I articulate the reasons for my opinions, whether people agree or not is up to them.

I don't incite anyone. Insightful in the word you're looking for. But you're probably an English teacher and having 3 kids in school myself, I'm used to helping them get a proper grip on the basics when they get home.

I'm going to enjoy the rest of the year. We show patches of great play and patches of very ordinary play. For me the problem was not all the mistakes, it was when we came out in the last quarter and couldn't/wouldn't try the dash down the middle. Its's the defensive mindset that often takes us over and then I just sit back and wait for the mistakes to happen.

I totally agree, RR. I will enjoy watching patches of brilliance. Young players will give you that. And it is that defensive mindset that sees us play our least worthy football. We have won close ones, now we seem to be losing them. We are competitive enough for long periods, even playing better footy for long periods - the six goal quarter against the Cats was fantastic. At this stage, a good draft pick, a key forward, is really what we need to get with an early pick next year, and I reckon we will. As it stands, making the opposition shite themselves for 3 1/2 quarters is the best we can hope for, and from that the young ones will develop a lot of confidence.
Ins: next week - Nyhuis, Blakely, Langdon.

The defensive mindset is a necessity, everyone wants that. But the real skill is to be able to revert to total offense when we need to. Our uncertainty is what frustrates me. yesterday, was it Fyfe on a wing, after a mark or free kick, with a chance to pump to about 15 metres out, but chose to go across the ground where after a couple of kicks was eventually a rushed kick into the same spot we could have kicked to about 10 seconds previously with Fyfe. Fyfe had time to actually measure the kick to place it hopefully to our advantage...but we ended up with a rushed kick to the same spot. Geeeez...
