A week off. Lesson learned. Gets back to playing great footy for us. BTW, you may recall when Shane Warne was busy winning test matches for us. Rumour has it that he didn't behave as well as everyone would have wanted, but somehow it was ok, because the thing he was actually paid to do - win test matches - he did that just fine.

The sickie is enshrined in Australian culture as something one does from time to time. If one gets nabbed , then it is a kick up the butt for a first offence.
It's not like he stole a car, took drugs, burgled, attacked someone or worst of all secretly barracked for Meth Coast.
Even Hawke said everyone should have a day off after been on the piss all night.
I think punishment by suspending him one match, hurts the team more than the individual. A better punishment would be to cancel surfing privileges for a month and be placed on three months probation.

Sorry Roger but the Shane Warne analogy doesn't work. The demands on AFL players far exceeds an Australian cricketer. You may as well use a world champion darts player in a parallel scenario.

Hey WTB...I just want to say thats not exactly true. ...the demands are certainly different, but dont think an Australian Test Cricketer doesnt do a lot of work. Yep theres the Merv Hughes/ Boony physique that you will counter against me but ...well...(wanted to lay low on this) ....I've played with a few of these guys over my time and Ive seen the bucket load of work thay have had to do to 1) get there, and 2) stay there.
Different sports, different requirements, but dont be fooled into thinking the modern Test Cricketer does it easy.
Nothing could be further from the truth....(.except I do agree Darts players ARE bums....: )) !!

It's mid season, teams are looking towards September even if you're sitting on the bottom of the ladder. We've come from an anus horribilis season trying to find our mojo. There's been enough off field drama that would make the Harry Potter series actually worth watching. Like Polly said, if you want to surf, plenty of time to do that. Young Josh Simpson would be saying, why me? And yet this clown just put his hand out for more $$$, and told porky pies to the people that gave. If anyone thinks that that is the Aussie way then I'm disappointed. Like Simon Goodwin said in his acceptance speech when inducted into the Hall of Fame. I quote " if the Sherrin was a perfume, I'd be wearing it". That's devoting your life to the cause. Not unlike someone going to war. So let's be clear about Blakely's actions. It's not what the Purple Army stand for, I would have thought.

I don't think anyone is disputing that he did the wrong thing by his teammates and the club as a whole and he deserves to be called out on it and punished. He will need to win back their trust. He needs to work hard to do that. I agree with all this.

What I don't agree with is treating him like Hannibal Lecter, throwing him onto the scrapheap and telling him there isn't enough good deeds in the world he could ever do to win his way back into the team. That's just ridiculous. It will be up to the players, I would think, to decide when he's done enough, and I'm sure he is learning right now that this type of behaviour isn't something he wants to repeat in the future.

Give the guy a break. Not because what he did wasn't significant, but because we're all human beings, we here are all purple-blooded, and I thought it was our way.

And there are 22 players who didn't say they were sick so they could go surfing who deserve our attention today more than Connor Blakely.

While cricketers may train hard, the game itself doesn't rely on the same aspects of team cohesion that an AFL side does ie relying on the bloke next to you to have your back in a physical contest.

I'm with CMB on this, the attention is now on the 22 that run out today. The Blakely matter has been an unwanted distraction for all no doubt including the playing group which is another downside to self centred conduct and behaviour in a professional team environment highly exposed to media attention.

How do you know "this clown" put his hand out for more money Jezza? Inside information?

I would have thought that would be up to his manager to do the negotiating and why would the circus ringleaders offer the clown more money if they didn't think he was worth it?

Considering he's been our most consistent player this year the clown probably deserved more.

Have you never made a mistake or done something you later regretted? After all just just because he's a footballer don't mean he's not human.

Let's not take the word mistake and confused it with intent. I've made plenty of mistakes more than most given my time on this planet, but none intentional that impacted on others. Though you learned from it and become a better person. With all the learnings that happened inside a footy club, selflessness is high on the agenda if not the pinnacle. This game today was very winnable not like last week where the odds suggested a blow out. Blakely would have made a big difference coupled that with the return of our champions. It's not just about today's game but the impact it has on the remainder. It's hard enough when players misses games through injury or suspension but missing games for "clown acts" just defies logic. I'll be watching today's game but gradually getting agro should Stevens or Ross or Steele or Billings or another Saint getting plenty of the ball knowing that perhaps that was Blakely's direct matchup for today and he's not there because of he's surfing prowess. Yep looking forward to that like a hole in the head.

Some of the comments here are seriously OTT. Do you all work for big bad mining companies who don't give second chances.

He did wrong, he paid the price and will be back in the team next week. I don't need 10 paragraphs to explain this.

De Goey, Harbrow, Greene, the list goes on. They're all back playing for their teams like Connor will be.

I'm more concerned about 211 & Hodor playing in the same team. Neither of them will be catching Montagna, Billings, Ross, et al.

And they're all clowns with little respect for the game they play. Perhaps that's fundamentally the problem. They think they're bigger than the game.

"This game today was very winnable not like last week where the odds suggested a blow out."

The odds might have suggested a blow out but you predicted we'd win it and we had Fyfe and Sandi out who'll be back today and just probably are more important than Blakely.
