TOPIC: The Forward Line

We have some clever footballers running around in the forward half. Why do we find it so hard to score? Ok, delivery is pretty awful most of the time. But McCarthy and Kersten look a bit tentative when it comes to making leads or just demanding direction of a kicker about to enter the forward fifty. McCarthy I reckon is a pure footballer and looking at his highlight reel you can see he has a knack for just getting the ball and creating scoring chances. In that last quarter on the weekend, when we were struggling to get the ball out of the middle or any stoppage for that matter why couldn't we have swung Cam into the middle and got him attacking the ball, get him involved...pushed Mundy forward, mixed it up a little. Anyway, any other observations or suggestions? Maybe Kersten has to have a spell at Peel? Bring in Nhyuis and drop Sheridan? I did notice Sheridan in the goal square when that last kick of Weller's went to the top of the square. Sheridan was the last man behind a few cats players...wrong spot for a kick coming across the face of goal. What do we need to do to spark our scoring apart from better entry?

First thing I would do is show Cam McCarthy and Kersten an aerial shot of Josh Kennedys` incessant leading patterns. Its called hard work and perpetual motion. Then tell him thats all he has to do, to keep getting a game.
Keep it simple, very simple. Run, lead, mark, turn, bang through goal, repeat. No body on body, no tricky holds, no double backs.
Tell him to run away from the other forward and under no circumstances to run into Sandilands.

Then show him a tape of Darling. Tell him if he copies that he will play for Peel.
Fat chance he will get any clear instructions.
I cant understand Roly at the best of times so Im not sure the forwards know what the heck he is talking about, if he mentions the forward line at all.

You make a lot of sense Rhufus. Keep it simple. Yep, forwards have to keep moving as you say...nothing a backman loves more than a stagnant forward, so predictable and easy to control.

I've gone the essay because there are some unrealistic expectations with these guys, and I'm bored.

I think there are a few factors working against McCarthy and Kersten. They definitely need to work as hard as Kennedy and could do worse than look at old tapes of Jason Dunstall who was constantly on the move (they used to have a camera on him ahead of the play). The midfield also needs to look at how Hawthorn and Geelong delivered the ball to Dunstall and Ablett Snr. There were no indiscriminate long bombs and more importantly they knew where they were leading to ahead of time and kicked accordingly. That understanding can only come if the forwards are moving to a plan that the midfield understands and the forwards need to be prepared to run without reward until it starts to work. None of it works without quick ball movement. So the players and coaches need to lift their games here.

More than anything though, I think we're asking a lot of these guys to be key forwards given their physical stature. It's not so much their height, it's their weight. Have a look at them compared to other key forwards, past and present, and they are giving away about 8kg. That's massive. They therefore don't have the strength to push off their defender or keep their ground in a marking contest and they aren't tall enough to make up for it.

What makes the other forwards (below) unique is their speed and mobility despite their weight, including Pav. There's more to it than that but it's a genetic advantage that McCarthy and Kersten don't have. McCarthy might be able to put on a few kilos but you wouldn't want him to lose any mobility in the process. Jack Riewoldt and Jeremy Cameron are a similar weight but are two inches taller and definitely quicker than Kersten. I can't think of a great key forward of the last 30 years who was around the 90kg mark. Even Modra was 95kg and he could stand on people's heads.

I think McCarthy will be great but not against the opposition's best defender. Kersten will only be effective if he's in sync with the midfield. Basically, we need a number one key forward with a clear physical advantage over the opposition so McCarthy and Kersten are opposed to lesser defenders.

Taberner's first game back showed how that can work but he makes Warren Ralph look blue collar.

Cam McCarthy
Height - 192cm
Weight - 90kg

Shane Kersten
Height - 191cm
Weight - 93kg

Josh Kennedy
Height - 194cm
Weight - 99kg

Lance Franklin
Height - 196cm
Weight - 100kg

Taylor Walker
Height - 194cm
Weight - 98kg

Matthew Pavlich
Height - 192cm
Weight - 99kg

Gary Ablett Snr
Height - 185cm
Weight - 97kg

Tony Lockett
Height - 191cm
Weight - 118kg

Jason Dunstall
Height - 188cm
Weight - 98kg

Then there was Scott "whoateallthepies" Cummings.
Sylvia was too short to be KPP, but I am sure he would make up for the deficit elsewhere...

Dunstall and Lockett would have had a cardiac arrest by 3/4 time if they did the work modern forwards have to.

McCarthy does not break free of his man. He should get some DVD tapes of Tony Modra and other greats.

Opponent are allowed to hold onto our blokes so much, they might as well take a straitjacket out with them.

Our forward line is as mythological as a ....yeti!

What we need is somebody to make use of what we have rather than trying to find another Lockett. We have a bit of speed, a bit of height and a bit goal kicking prowess that is available for out forward structure but we don't have any plan to use what we have.

Tabs, McCarthy and even Kersten all have a bit of tank so fitness isn't the issue. We need to create a structure where a marking tall is available in the forward line and a fast crumber is at their feet. But all too often our forward 50 has a smaller population that the Sahara Desert.

With 3 mobile talls available, why can't we have a structure that allows areas for leads to me made and honoured?

Here's a thought, get that, get our mids to look for a target and get some support for the guys up forward. We aren't going to get another Pav by Sunday but we can sure get a forward line by then

I always thought that Ballantyne was the missing link to the Big Cam/Kersten populated fwd 50 - I reckon this game we'll see it. Kersten's a good kick for goal, should be a solid mark and is strong. I thought he would make a good chf but they've plunked a career defender up there (Cox) - because he's a great mark. Ballantyne creates chaos - that's where Cam and Kersten perform best (in my view).

But expecting our midfield to deliver it consistently well to a leading forward has never been our strong suit - Pav struggled for years with wonky kicks forward. I like how the Bummers move the ball forward out of the centre, largely hand balling at speed to players on the move and overlapping through the guts. We play the long ball to the wing hoping that one of the Hills will get it to Mikey on the forward flank. If Fyfe started marking the ball again it would help, running Stephen Hill through the midfield would also help. But maybe we're just waiting for Harley to sort all this out. I expect so - I wouldn't give a bent nickel to any of our ass. coaches.

In our best years Ballas and Mayne were our lead-up players. There's no reason Ballas and McCarthy couldn't do the same.

The only problem is the next kick was to Pav.

Give Darcy a break. He may one day be a good knock ruckman who makes some clearances. But he's not a goal kicking forward .
