YThere's been talk about Freo's recruiting in the last 3-4 years about the lack of foresight to not pick KPP. Blakely's draft of 2014 was an example of KPP gone begging. Our first pick was Weller at 13. Jake Lever (Adl) was pick 14 and I remember the screams from some how we missed him. No. 1 pick was McCartin (Saints), Petracca (2) and Brayshaw (3). Liam Duggan Eagles (11), all went before Blakely. If Connor was playing for a Melb club he'd be considered a Brownlow chance much like Clayton Oliver. Oliver was pick 4 in 2015. As a comparison, Blakely's stats are better than Oliver's, just saying.

Just as an aside Jezza, the only name I recognise in that list is Blakely. Who are the others? Why did we not draft them? I would imagine their beep tests and vertical leap and 5 km run, and their clean hands figures were in the elite range?

Blakely was our 2nd round pick at 34. Weller our first round pick at 13. Issac Heeney was an academy pick for Sydney at 18. Probably a player whom we've missed is Mitch McGoven brother of Jeremy, whom Adl picked up at pick 43. Should have been a father/son selection had his old man played a few more for Freo. My point is the top 10 picks of that draft, most have played more games that Blakely but have yet to have a major impact. The players picked between Weller and Blakely, some have been talked up as superstars but none IMO are as good as Blakely. We got a genuine superstar at a bargain basement price.

Perhaps names like Caleb Daniel would be more recognisable because he won a premiership with the Dogs last year but others in that draft like McGovern and Cockatoo, both I think still has a lot to prove have been talked up by the media as top shelf. Must be watching a different game to me.

Agree that Blakely has been a great get, but if you don't think Lever would be a walk up start in any sides backline then you haven't watched or read about football too much.
There is speculation that he might return to Victoria and clubs are already wetting themselves in anticipation. Besides that you can't compare a versatile midfielder to a key position marking backman.

I like Weller, but at the time it was surprising that we took him ahead of Lever. Perhaps after what happened with Mora we were spooked by taking a bloke who already had an ACL recon under his belt.

Connor is a small success story for Freo. Taken at pick 34, given a small taste in his rookie season, given plenty of chances in his second season (when young players start to build their tank), and a regular by his third year. I also like that he has been given a number of roles to develop his game.

He’s a natural footy player so that makes it easier, but it goes to show that we can develop players from time-to-time.

Lever is a gun. And yes the comparison Is a moot point but if you study the 2014 draft clubs were loading up on mids and I believe in Weller and Blakely in particular we snared a couple of gems. Adelaide has a predicament in keeping Lever (Vic) and McGovern (WA), who have indicated they're not signing just yet. Danger signs.

Good on him for accepting a 20% salary increase. I think there's a train of thought around town that anyone playing for the only Eastern suburbs WAFL team is a cheap pickup. Well, wrongo drongo. But unlike Lever, McKonkout and McMacca, Connor is an honest hard-workin' footballer, not a knobber.

Morgan you seem to underate picks outside of the top ten. Its perfectly reasonable to expect a footballer of Blakely's standard to be taken at pick 34 if your talent scouts and recruiting manager do their job.

Sustained success was something maybe even the only thing Steve Harris ever said. I take it to mean always being up and around the place, challenging for a flag. In the months leading up to him leaving the club like a thief in the night he justified our current debacle by blaming draft position.

Its a crock..Geelong essentially built their era on 2nd, 3rd and 4th rd draft picks. Minus Ablett and Selwood.

You should be getting a gooden with pick 34.

I reckon Christian Petracca is a bloody beauty. But he only got 2 votes (i.e. 1 more than Weller) in the final NAB Rising Star wash-up. Connor Blakely is a ripper, if half our team had his reflexes no one would catch us.
