Whether its "eating a bit of humble pie", 'being fully informed', or just "having a good, hard think about things", I've just gone through the experience of trying to "name a team that takes us forward."

It is a very interesting experience, and,... well...maybe the demands I've made that we play youth at all costs is "a bit adventurous". Its actually quite hard to fit them all in, ...and, have a sensible team at the same time! Maybe, I've got to take back a few things I've intimated about Roly and his selection panel !!??!

I downloaded the full senior squad, and, the current injury list. I looked at the rookie list, and whilst I'd like to see Messers Deluca, Nyhuis, Strnadica, Duman, and Ubergang play, I assumed they are all unavailable.

In the interests of youth, but a 'realistic' competitive team, I put a line through The Fist, Ibbo, Suban D.Pearce, Sheriden, Griffen, Bennell, Tabenar, A. Pearce, Grey, Clarke, Sutcliffe, Spurr, Apeness, Balic.

Of that lot...there are some good long time servants, some long term injuries that we'd like to see play (Bennell, Clarke, A Pearce,), and Ibbo, Spurr and Tabs are unlucky. Tabs would otherwise be named in a team of youth, but he's got to learn to dominate before he comes back in (in my view....) Balic is out, but hopefully not for long.

From our injury list I assume (on the basis of how RoLy is talking, Ballas, Langdon, and Sandy are able to play. Don't believe all 3 will, but for this exercise, I'll assume they do.
And so...
A 'youth inspired, competitive" team for this week looks like :

Logue Mcarthy Ballantyne
Walters Kersten Crozier
S Hill Neale B Hill
Blakely Johnno Langdon
Ryan Hamling Hughes

R : Sandy Fyfe Mundy

Int: Cox Tucker Collins Darcy

Now, I'm not sold on the positioning..just the personnel....but the real issue is, there is not a lot outside that list that are available. Nothing in fact, unless Tabs starts dominating, or Balic is back and up-to-speed, and Brady grey is not injured. Or, we pull someone of the rookie list ie Deluca.

And...there's still a lot of old blokes in there!!!

I'd be interested if Dockerlanders would be 'happy' with the above team, knowing that it sacrifices a few good soldiers (Spurr, Ibbo, and maybe Griffen and Sheriden) for the future, or whether the 'same old, same old' is preferred??

What I do know, is that it is not an easy exercise, especially if Johnno, Mundy, Fyfe, S.Hill,Sandy and Ballas are all "hanging on by a thread". Anyway, would be interested in peoples thoughts....

Would you not include Weller in the starting line-up?

Yes!! ...a cleverer person definitely would! ...somehow, he was missed. So, replace Collins (height), or....who? Hughes??....Cox?? ...Ryan??
Or dont play Darcy?? In a way, its robbing peter to pay paul.
Or, an older experienced bloke playing half decently, has to go. (Ie Kersten, and Cox stays.)
Hard!...and thats my point!

Yeah I totally agree, it's not an easy exercise =)

Perhaps Crozier and Langdon could swap postions, Blakely could play off the Inter-change bench, Weller could play in Blakely's position, and Collins was omitted?

Yeah...not too worried about positioning... (learnt that of RoLy...) but fitting young blokes in is the issue. And yet that is exactly what we need to do.
So what Ive learnt is that there are 2 issues :
A) How do you fit them in and keep things 'half sensible'
B) Where are all the young blokes? Most of them arent available unless we write some off from the senior list.
IMHO, " The Fist" should retire immediately, and a rookie should be promoted ie Deluca or Nyhuis

Still not sure Tucker is quite there yet albeit promising so he could go for Weller who can play mid or back or forward
Just a thought ......

Well done Cletus, you almost got (we will give you the Weller omission) the complete side for this week and in basically the right positions.

Lets face it, theres no easy way to do this really. Im not sure there is one specific "answer".

If you are a play the best side sort of person, some of these young guys wouldnt be getting a game.
If you are a rebuilder, then really, Sandi wouldnt play again, neither would Ballas, Mundy nor Johnno as they wont be around for the first flag, (unless you subscribe to the Shane theory that basically any one can win it if they are coached well, including Freo this year).
If you are a restump rewire but no need for a total rebuild sort of guy, then you would basically select the team we selected this week. Some old, some young some in betweeners.

I must admit I oscillate a bit week to week, much like Roly and Freo seem to do. Would probably prefer someone at Freo to make a call and stick with it.

Well...I certainly stuffed up with Weller.. Hes a definite "IN". But note I did note have Sheriden IN and neither Suban, nor Spurry actually (...that was a bit harsh). But, in part I understand the presence of players of their ilk, because you can swing a team to be weak, too inexperienced.
And an absolute flogging from a team like Geelong does no one any good.
With Darcy & Logue and the naming of the other inexperienced guys (Cox & Ryan), I think there is enough signs that they have decided the path they will take for the rest of the year, and I'm pretty happy with what they've decided.
I'll be happier if the final team doesn't include Sheriden, although, I really hope and await the day, when it finally twigs for Sheriden and he becomes the player his high draft pick potential suggested.

Yep, agree with youth policy. Not sure Sheridan will ever have any more impact than he does currently. At least not as a half back. He is on the slow side so he is always under extreme pressure to get rid of the ball and that is when his disposal is at its worst. I suppose the same can be said of Ibbo, Sutcliffe and Spurr. We cannot carry to many slower guys in defence. If Ross insists on having Sheridan in the team, play him forward or through the middle but don't expose him down back.
