There are too many variables to generalize on in regard to now, and results this year for most teams would support this.

Until 2019...,unless we fix the known weaknesses i.e. Some gun kpp and ruck for the future we'll be firing into the wind and relying on our often maligned coach to squeeze wins out of the squad.

I agree GC is also at risk of falling off the pace, but May, Wright and Lynch is a fair headstart on our KPP stocks.

Things don't stay static while you wait around for young players to get a bit older. Sandilands, Johnson, Ballantyne and Mundy are gone. Stephen Hill and Michael Walters are getting into the twilight of their careers. And how much improvement is in these younger players that it's worth losing two years of Nat Fyfe's best football?

Waiting around for them to get older appears to be what we're doing. That's the problem - we should be making them get better.

Shane, all the above players play when they can play. By God we need each one of them !!
But, where opportunity/ injury presents, we've got to be prepared to rest each one of them and give the corresponding young bloke a go. eg Sandilands for Darcy , not Griffen. That is why I don't understand the selections for the Brisbane game. Lotta blokes injured / tired yet we play them and get flogged, rather than play young fellows and get flogged?!! Would have preferred to have seen the latter rather than former.
But for fellows like Ibbo, Sutcliffe, maybe Spurr, definitely Suban, Pearce, Griffen and Dawson, time is up.
Great Servants, great blokes, but they are the past and we need to get to the future real quick. Zac Clarke is probably not a long term solution, so if he suddenly becomes available leave him at Peel for the moment.
If Hill or Fyfe aren't right, Don't play them ...no matter how great they are. Waste the game on a young up & comer rather than create a bigger injury.
If Taberner or another young fellow (ie Logue) aren't progressing or showing great input, sling 'em out and put another young one in and see if he'll have a go. Having said that, its time for Logue to have another go.
Breed competition for places rather than the theme of the past 6 years ie playing RoLy's favourites

It's hard to evaluate relative to other teams, because few people really know the squad depth of all 18 clubs.

I do have a sense of the strength of the team on the park against Brisbane last round, and the strength of the 2013 Freo GF team (which in many years would have been good enough to win a premiership).

We’re a long way off.

There is a reality where the current Freo squad could fluke a premiership in an open year, but in that reality Fyfe was back to his Brownlow best, Bennell was setting Subi alight, A Pearce was controlling the air in the backline, Ballas was having a throwback season up forward, one of Tabs or Apeness was providing a genuine target up front, one of the young kids (Weller, Tucker, Balic) took a huge step up, and Lyon got the most out of some maligned role players (Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Hendrix).

Those things didn’t eventuate. We did get some good outcomes - Johnno has performed well, Blakely has improved, Neale has proven last season wasn’t a fluke, and Sandi has contributed - but we’ve had more things go against us than for us.

There are many possible reasons for that - bad coaching, bad medical staff, injury prone players, bad luck – but the team that is lobbed on the park from week-to-week just isn’t really that good.

But all of the things listed above could happen in 2018.

Those blokes aren't getting a game*. You're arguing to do something that has already been done, presumably out of habit. I also think that players will get better because you play them is spurious. Sutcliffe should be a champion by that logic.

*Griffin gets a game because it was supposed to be a couple of weeks out for Sandilands at most.

We should have about 10 flags by now on that logic, and Bond should be hailed as a recruiting genius, but that's not how it works, we don't, and he is not.

Where your argument is falling down, Shane is the off field component.

You've made a valid case for the on field types, who if they play to their potential, could beat any other side on the day. But what if they are not allowed to play to their potential?

Somebody has to be the one to coordinate a team effort and a team direction. If that direction is usually backwards rather than forwards then you can have as many long haired saviours as you want but a team that isn't playing football isn't going to win that many games of football.

I might have been misintrepreted...sorry!
What worries me is Lyon's statement at the end of the Brizzy Debacle, that "the midfield got obliterated", and, "that there'd have to be changes."
With Fyfe , Mundy , Neale, Blakely and the 2 Hills going through there, I wondered what the bloody hell he meant???!!
He either was only talking about bringing Sandy in for Griffen, Or hes talking about bring Suban and D Pearce back in. OR, hopefully, its someone like Deluca.
Hopefully its the latter rather than the former, and that was the point I was trying to make (...obviously rather poorly)
For me, where we are going as a club, will be defined in this week's selections. Backwards, Stagnating, or Fowards....it'll be seen on Thursday night I guess...

The list we have is not incredible but good enough to challenge for a higher position on the ladder. We've beaten the Bulldogs, Richmond, Melbourne and Essendon so this proves the potential.

I don't think our list was much better in 2013 and we made the big one. Some of our big names that season missed large chunks of the year through injury.

The Bulldogs didn't have a list of superstars last season but they were coached well and had a really good style of play that the players believed in.

When I compare the list we have this year to the Bulldogs there is no reason we couldn't at least have a crack at achieving what they did.

My argument is against time being a solution.

If there's an off field problem then I assume the argument against me is that we should accept the losses and give the young coaches time to develop.

Cletus, when Ross says there needs to be changes he doesn't necessarily means changes to personnel. He may mean changes to structure or style of play.
