TOPIC: is it just me?

Awake is it just me? 6 years 10 months ago #1

Awake
Rohan Connolly has written a piece about not much at all today that started with "There's a lot for which to be thankful this AFL season. A competition tighter than ever, a surplus of thrilling finishes and a perpetual air of unpredictability."
I don't know about the thrilling finishes - they have been some close ones. Yes, it is a close competition this year but my question is: why are most games hardly worth watching?
I switch on, look for a while and then go and do some gardening. There is something not very engaging about the game at the moment.
Is it just me?

I am with you Awake, I have reverted back to local footy. Struggle to remain interested in current zoned game with majority of players in 1/3 of ground followed by a foot race.

I am feeling a bit the same way. I wonder as our team continues to perform very ordinarily does it ibecome easy to lose interest in watching the other teams as you lose interest in trying to gather intelligence on the other teams for when we might next play them. It might be a 'disgraceful' thing to say - but some truth perhaps.

Totally agree. I feel very disengaged from footy this season, and it's affecting my support for the Dockers, which is slowly drifting towards couldn't-care-less.
Most games this season have been more like school yard "kick and rush" soccer.

Was in Melb last weekend and witnessed 2 great games in Carl v GWS and Melb v Pies at the G. Being a neutral supporter, thoroughly enjoyed both games. Perhaps when Freo start playing well, interest will ignite again. But in all honesty, Freo needs to deliver and quickly before supporters jump off them altogether.

The real supporters won't jump off Jezza. I think a lot of us though are tired of the beltings we're getting, particularly when we had that taste of what we thought would be sustained success only to see the biggest and quickest fall in AFL history.

Yes, it is the constant rule changes to negate coaching tactics that have turned the game into a boring slugfest. The coaches are paid enough money, and have enough ass. coaches to come up with their own solutions to "Pagan's Paddock", "Rolyball" "eagles web" or whatever the media invention of the day is. Let them work it out. I will say it again, go back to the rules of the 70's/80's and start again. DON'T be influenced into rule changes by the media or lazy coaches, and give flair a go. Remember what the game was like when Bosustow, Kenny Hunter, Michael Mitchell Peter Troode, Vern Orr and the like would take 3 or 4 speccy's a week? When Manassa or Gabelich or Mora would run the length of the ground bouncing the ball, and forwards had room to lead, and were allowed to snap goals from the boundary, and there was no such thing as "the hot spot"? I want to see that again. The only way to get back to it is tell the umpires they are allowed 2 ball-ups a quarter, and get the game opened up again.

The reason why we so often get 40 players in 1 third of the ground is that grandstanding umpires want to take a minute or more to set up for a simple throw in the air, and give time for that to happen. Pay a free instead, there is always one to be picked out, and force the players to play their positions. Tell the umpires that people come to watch the players not them.

I can't recall the no. of interchanges permissible back in the 70s and 80s, but I think that's the problem in our game today. The players will fatigued and sooner if the AFL reduces that number down to about 40-60. This year, other then Freo copping a few beltings there aren't too many scores above the magical 100 pts. Perhaps high scoring games will start to happened if there are less interchanges.

You watch footage of those old games and then come back and tell me it was a better spectacle. It was largely a whole load of crapola punctuated by marks and punch ups.The grounds chopped up badly and blokes got tired if they had to flow the mullet any further than 50m in one hit.

The interchange was viewed as punishment as recently as Peter Bell rebelling against Chris Connolly and his game plan of high rotations off the bench. The interchange was increased to 4 when Mick Malthouse still had influence. Well, got a lot of airtime at least, which means the same thing in footy.

Cutting back interchanges should slow the game down a bit and the fitter teams who can still provide hard run in the later stages will benefit.

None of those things should really be having a major influence in the attraction of the game though. A lot of it for us is probably the poor performances because when Freo are playing well there's plenty of chat and positive energy in the comments. When they drop off you start to notice other factors like banal commentary, the sheer number of comments type idiots employed and the relecntless spin and sales pitch that treats supporters like fools.

No-one likes to be played for a fool.

I quite like the way footy is played in the AFL these days. Professionalism and modern coaching has meant the players' skills, athleticism and bravery is astounding. Some of the ball movement and end-to-end footy is extraordinary. I just wish Freo played more of it.

But the downside to each team having 86 coaches is they need to try and invent ways to bugger up the game for a tactical advantage. That leads to sports administrators getting involved by adapting the laws of the game to cope. I'd be mad about it, but I reckon the administrators 'leaving the game alone' would actually lead to worse outcomes than their mixed-bag of rule changes.

I’m not sure how to best deal with it. It seems to me that players have become so fast and fit, and are able to cover more ground and get to more contests, that relatively speaking, there is less space on the ground. Given you can’t make the ovals bigger, there has been some talk of reducing the number of players on the park down to 16. I actually think it’s worth considering because more time and space on a field could lead to a better spectacle, but many who complain about congestion would also complain that rule changes are needless tinkering. My biggest concern is that aussie rules is so random a sport, every change seems to have unintended consequences.

I took my nieces and nephews – normally trapped in Canberra – to the Freo v North game. Kersten kicked the sealer and Subi went bonkers, as did my nieces and nephews. They wear Freo backpacks to school now. I’ll remember that moment long after the drudgery of the Pies game has slipped my mind; which is the problem with comparing the modern game with our memory of former eras.

I reckon footy is going ok.

Difficult. I'd settle for the rules/umpires interpretations staying the same for a season. But right now the AFL is so hands on that we can expect rules to change quarter by quarter.
But the odd thing this season are the number of games that are over by quarter time (except for Richmond, who are good sports in this regard). I suppose coaches are pretty confident they can defend a lead, so they tell the players to absolutely smash the first quarter. This is also the quarter where the umps are trying to stamp their authority on the game by giving 50m penalties and soft frees in front of goals. So I guess we just have to be better at jumping out of the starting blocks and getting it into our forward 50 early in the game.

Typical Freo that we can't apply that first quarter rule of yours RR instead of having it applied to us.

It's a little tricky to reconcile that argument with that easy sense of calm I had for a few weeks when Freo were down by 5 goals early in the second quarter though.
