Well said Rhufus!! No one can accept (or defend) the fact that we are 18th for average tackles. And it doesnt really matter if its the players or coaches fault - its just simply got to be better.!
Tackle count is really a indicator of "effort" in my humble opinion.
So if we arent putting in 'effort', we dont seem to have a 'game plan'...well..what does that tell you about what we are doing in 2017????
And you are dead right about your energy spent for result quorient. Wish there was a stat for that. Definitely, we'd be first in that...!

you dont see it very well on tv,but watch us live and as i said previously in the pies game ,totally unattended players throughout the game ,easy short pass kick to a player way out on his own,in the last qtr against the pies in happened in front of us three times ,just after we had kicked those couple of goals, treloar to pendleberry, then next kick to an unmanned player 40 out, disgraceful, until rl goes from a totally defensive team to attacking,we are doomed, and i agree 2013,14, 15, it worked with a different squad, but the games changed ,move on. ,and as rhufus said ,not close enough to tackle, drawn to the ball, and watch as a handpass goes out to a loose opposition player, bombers did it too and lions ,so blatant it's a joke.

Yep, all comes down to closing down opposition options, something we excelled at 2012,13,14...and 2105 for half a season. But you need real intent, and unfortunately, too often in our big losses we have seen, even on the limited TV view, players jogging down the middle whilst we are getting slaughtered on the outside. I sit behind the forward pocket subi end and against cats and pies you got a real good view on the opposition streaming into outside space, seemingly unattended or with players too far behind to catch them or put reasonable doubt in their minds, ie rushed kick under pressure. Yes, sometimes we do turn it over inexplicably so we are caught out, expecting to maintain possession, but the opposition instead streaming away on the outside...or worse still, through the middle. We need everyone on board with a ferocious intent but preferable more speed to accompany that ferocity.

Rhufus has nailed it. Freo players trailing their opponents to the ball, opponents kicking short passes to leading players - we're stuffed. It has happened for a few years, starting with Richmond ending our 2015 winning streak, went pear shaped after that.

When it happens though it is caused by lack of effort, or inability to put effort in (cause we're knackered). Surely not a deliberate game plan.

Rhufus said: "Its our inability to man up when the opposition has the ball."

Football has not been played like this in a very long time, except perhaps in the under 12s. The reason is that it doesn't work.

RedNed I think we are talking about slightly different things. Youre right that strict man on man football like 40 years ago doesnt work any more. Players are too clever and the forwards will just clear the forward line if the players are stuck like glue and create a Pagans Paddock up forward or a congested mess in their own defensive 50.

Im not talking about a strict man on man all over the ground. Im talking about once the opposition has the ball or looks like getting the ball most of our players should close down the gap to their player, not continue to loiter in a zone. We can still have a spare man in defence if we want.

Imagine if every time Gaff went looking for cheapies off to the fat side someone went with him. Imagine that every time the opposition looked into the corridor or the fat side we had players manning up in those areas. This would force them, as Dennis Commetti might say into the third of two options, a long boot down the congested side of the ground.

I understand that with a turnover or a quick play we may not always be able to man up as we may be running hard forward. What galls me most is when the opposition has the ball for about 30 seconds and we are still miles from our players. Thats not lack of effort I dont think. Thats lack of instruction to the contrary.

Most of the good wins I see from any club, are achieved by initially placing maximum pressure on the ball carrier, covering their quick outlet handball/kick to the outside and getting them to dispose without looking long down the line. Of course theres a million ways to win but its rare to see one that doesnt at least involve man on man severe pressure all over the ground. Theres still a role for manning up, footy doesnt change that much.

Hold marks in the 50m and kick the goal. Kick the ball to a player wearing the same jumper colour as you.
And handball to a team mate who is more than a foot away from you and not being held in same scrum.
And maybe try another method of kicking the ball out of defence after the ball fly's back over your head each time.
We will beat Geelong.
