Tell you one excuse I am tired of hearing is, Ross's game plan is exhausting. Tell me a game plan that is not exhausting, every AFL team has an exhausting game plan, that is why players receive good money and adulation. We have too many players that are willing to leave it to others.
Having said that there has to be a coaching element that allows a playing group to lag off and allow first possesion to another and then coral rather than tackle. Ross has alluded in previous years that we are low tackling team and seems ok with this. Earlier in the year Geelong fell off in this area and coach was publicly severe, they responded with 100+ the next week from memory and haven't lost since.

Show me a high tackling team and I'll show you why it's unsustainable. GWS, Adl and Geelong are not high tackling teams. Geelong's recent 100+ tackles is an outlier. The top teams have got at least 70-80% of their 22 who can kick the ball well and hit targets regularly. Freo on the other hand can't kick efficiently. We still are a team of blue collared workers who rely on a few to kick well. There's no magic formula. Though I thought GWS losing to Carlton was not plausible. Until yesterday, they were in 17th position on the ladder. Go figure.

If your team has a really high tackle count, they probably haven't got the ball as often as they should, you're chasing the team that has.

Kicking is the most efficient method of passing the ball. Provided you can make your contested and uncontested marks stick.

That's rubbish, and like saying fast food is actually good for you because you only need to eat 1/10 the volume of regular, healthy food to satisfy your energy intake requirements.

Your tackle count doesn't need to be the highest in the league, but it needs to be higher than Freo's. And harder.

When Adelaide, Collingwood and, good Lord, Brisbane have that much more of the ball AND your tackle count is low, you're smashed.

The giants the throws and the cats may not be all that tackly, but I tell you what, if you exert more physical pressure on them, close down the space as soon as they get near the ball, and once they get it, nail them in an arm-pinning tackle, over and over again, you gain confidence that your team wants it and you beat them.

When Carlton, whom we know have been on a rebuild for years, beat the premiership favourite yesterday, it was on the back of Matthew Kreuzer's dominance (33HO, 6M and a goal). It was the blues pressure and intensity not through their tackling feats that torched the Giants. Carlton laid 55 tackles to the Giants 69 and the Blues won the contested possession by 10. Carlton was coming off a bye though to some that's irrelevant. But getting back to Freo, losing to Brisbane by 50+ points is not a disaster that many are declaring. Its a season of the unpredictable. Who would have thought beating the Dogs, Rich and Melb (away) would have been plausible.

Carlton won by a point, losing the last quarter on the scoreboard and could well have gone down by three goals or more if Toby Greene had kicked something other than four behinds for the quarter.

A story not dissimilar to a few Freo wins this season.

I hope Carlton is not your yardstick, or we are set for another 23 years of a premiership-free trophy cabinet.

Not suggesting tackling is the be all and end all, but we seem to show it scant regard. Obviously it is better to have the ball but we currently show very little physicality at this either. I am not sure that it is neccessarily true to say that the team that has highest possesion therefore lose tackle count.

I get really disappointed in the attempted tackles , the half-hearted tackles and the missed or slip-through tackles. So many times our players cannot make them stick. Frustrating.

And so many times they make them stick, only to see their opponent

I) Throw the ball out to a teammate
ii) Get tackled through the "full 360" or more, then get a handpass out
iii) Hold the ball until umpire "clownface" comes in to show his skill at throwing the ball in the air.

Don't blame the players if they have had a gutsful of tackling.

Geelong get a 10 day break before playing Freo. Rigged draw?

You'd have to be very cynical & suspicious to believe that 3 successive home games, followed by 13 day & 10 day breaks, is in any way indicative of VFL favouritism.

I've given up on an equitable AFL. It's city hall, they do whatever they want. As for Freo fronting up at Geelong after the bye, I'm tipping an upset, like the one in 2013. No one saw that coming.

Its not the tackle count thats so relevent. Its not even our technique, which at the moment looks poor. Its our inability to man up when the opposition has the ball.
When you man up, you force the opposition to go to a contest OR they hesitate a split second looking around for an uncontested receiver OR where they previously had three options they now only have one. All of these outcomes are positive for the team manning up.
Of course its not possible for every person to be manned up as we play the spare in defence and that always leaves one bloke unattended elsewhere.
Its when Treloar or Couch or Zorko look up and there are 5 team mates all in various parts of the ground, all who have their Freo player loitering about 15 m away daring them to accurately kick it 35m to hit a target, that it becomes a problem.
The tackle numbers are merely a result of the fact we are not close enough to tackle. Its so obvious at the game once you look for it.
Watch the next ball up or congested play. Watch our players get drawn like magnets to the congestion. Watch the opposition players just linger on the outside, wander to the fat side. Then watch them distribute it to someone unattended and then say I wonder why we are coming 18th in tackles. More effort is simply not the solution. We have to play smarter. If there was a measure of effort for result we would be highest in effort and lowest on the quotient.
