Many teams have had a slump and recovered already this season. Geelong, Collingwood, Essendon, WCE the list goes on.

You need sustained effort to win games as shown against the Bulldogs in R3. But this take a great toll on players each week.

So far, more teams than not have won games after their bye, even against opposition way above them on the ladder.

Poor skills are damaging but the lack of intensity and effort is the reason Freo (and other teams) are getting belted.

So agree with FreOO. I certainly don't expect to win every game but the way we lose and the massive losing margins to even supposedly worse sides than us is so demoralising.
If it's demoralising to supporters it must be just as bad for the players. Those sort of results just help to make us the butt of all the old jokes again.

the question for me is the ross lyon game plan sustainable today.
I think a game plan based on good skills as opposed to manic effort is week in week out more durable.

If you're really truly, rebuilding, you focus on that - not what ladder position you want at seasons end.

I understand supporters get focussed on results, and so therefore do admins, as they want to manage expectations.

But if you're rebuilding you can't be expecting to make finals and add a scoop of hope on that, on the back of some last minute wins. You plan and pick your team based on getting games into players that are part of the rebuild and players that help that transition, and take whatever ladder positions you get by doing so.

Lyon has already created the rebuild expectation, why would people then expect a cake and eat scenario of blooding players and playing finals?

I take it that none of the teams in the top 8 or just below it are rebuilding then.

The fact of the matter is all teams are rebuilding all the time, eg Geelong. One year out of the top 8 and straight back in the next year.

The basket case teams, Brisbane, Carlton, Melbourne are possibly different but none of the other 14 teams are.

Carlton and Melbourne seem to be on track and did anybody expect the drug cheats to be doing as well as they are this year? Not if you check the ladder predictions on here from the start of the season. In fact that there was plenty of talk as to how and why we would be able to bounce straight back into the eight this year.

Continuing turnover and rebuilding aren't the same thing.

If other teams can clear out stocks and get up the ladder, then there's a failure of coaching and management to achieve the same. The line coming out of FFC when things are going pear shaped is that 4 years of crapulousness is to be expected.

The fact is that most on here would be absolutely fine if we were losing by the margins we are if we were fielding a truely "rebuilding" team, the fact that Logue has only played 3 games, Ryan 2 games and Cox 1 game, with Darcy missing out altogether after 12 rounds, indicates that at the very best the management are hedging their bets about this so called "rebuild" or at worst it really is just a line trundelled out after bad losses to explain the poor performances.
It needs to be clarified that our best game this year both in winning margin and in general play was the rnd 3 game against the dogs, which by all players accounts the coaches took their hands off the wheels and said "go play your natural game".
Biz was lambasted on this site for suggesting that Ross didn't seem to enjoy the win and IMHO that was totally to do with the fact the players proved him so wrong. We have a talented side who when left to their own devices and allowed to take the game on can win and play attractive football. Since that game the coaches have been slowly reeling back in the reins, the exciting youngsters (Logue for one) have been dropped back to peel and old stalwarts (sutcliffe & Pierce) brought back into the side. Look how that has turned out!
Personally I think the first half of this year had put our rebuild behind schedule by 6 months so will now take 4 1/2 years.
We simply need to get as many games into the young guys as possible in the remaining 10 games and see what we have got. Otherwise this is just another wasted year in which Sandi, MJ, Mundy and anyone else over 30 edge closer to retirement and we wonder what might have been.

I said at the time that we should appoint Fyfe as Captain Coach, it didn't happen and we have fallen away again. He is clearly a favorite of the umps, (having polled well in and winning a Brownlow) and is a Freo player who is actually recognised by the media. Make RoLy the Director of Football or some such position and let the players loose.

This is why I think the rebuild is BS. Sure, all rookies can't play every game or you'll crush team morale and burn them out early, and they may pick up injuries that linger.

But to bring back the usual suspects in their place, instead of some rotational system where 1 or 2 are always in there, either suggests they have no idea how to manage this, or they're just talking rubbish.

It's true, they did seem to go a lot better with youngsters in. They were quicker, moved the ball better and seemed to have confidence. It's all withered very quickly. The only reason good players and teams that seem to be gelling go bad in a matter of weeks, has to be down to coaching.

I remember Hawthorn back in around 2004. The umpires hated them. When they won, you couldn't see how they could ever lose. Then the next week they were terrible. But they were brave. They had the "line in the sand" game against Essendon. They stuck at it, and became very good.
I'm not sure our players are that good. But what worries me is that we don't seem brave. Roly says its a 5 year rebuild, but then keeps selecting the old guys. I don't want young guys to automatically get a game no matter how badly they play. And maybe 3 games was enough for Logue. Maybe Ethan Hughes needed to be dropped. Maybe Brady Gray wasn't good enough to play AFL last year. Maybe it all makes sense, but it all seems too cautious.

Pretty close. Which means either Duffman has actually watched games of football, or I'm getting old in agreeing with him.

Except for his opinion of Mac. For a bloke with a year out of footy he's providing more than we might have expected, and is looking like that natural forward we need.
