Hughes will be a very good footballer off halfback for Freo. He's only played 15 games of footy.
The turnovers you mentioned were catastrophic and if he has been sent back to peel to address that fair enough.
If you compare him to Spurr, Sutcliffe, Sheridan, Tucker, Suban and the 2016-17 Ibbo and others we have seen played down back over last season or two he is more composed under pressure (no hasty kicks forward, no spilled marks or loose balls, etc .... he was only defender who stood up in the derby), quick but not lightning and strong. And more importantly he is actually trying to create and set the game up. Spurr gets some bonus points because of his contested marking and hardness on the field but he is the slowest of that whole mob which hurts us from time to time.
Any time a team turns the ball over on half back it is freakin nightmare but some of the current stars who are trying to play quarter-back and set th9ings up in that in that role make mistakes as ugly as the ones Hughes made last week.
Hoping Balic returns, Luke Ryan has a good game and would be good to see Cox rip up the game against Bris if he can replicate his WAFL form ... so we have more options and runners of HB.
Not sure of their contract status but as blokes heading to their 30s Spurr and Ibbo might be getting changed out for a younger brigade despite their service and previous efforts.
